    This is quite interesting, I just came across it by searching plasma. I was wondering, why the overhead beam is along the long axis? Is it a workshop real estate constraint, or some other reason?

    That beam you refer to is actually a length of aluminium angle. It's purpose is to support the drag chain that holds the wiring for the stepper motor and also the limit switch and probe switch cables.
    The drag chain is the black object that is shown along the length of the angle.
    I have since used this machine to make a new one that is all steel and uses my own design of bearing carriages. When it is completed I will post details of it on this site.
