On the original design, the x-axis rail needed to be an extra 3mm wider then the outer edge of the base assembly. Was this taken into consideration on this bundle? I havent had time to fully look at the dimensions of rails cut.
We did our best to ensure that this version is as modular as possible and in doing so made sure that the x axis rail could be extended or shorted along it length creating a machine that can grow according to the users needs. So yes its working great, and in fact we have had one of the early betas in the wild for some time with Team member and Project Maker @Ariel Yahni making great Projects.

We are so happy to finally be able to offer a group of proper cartesian style router systems, its always been something that we have wanted to do and it's great to be moving forward in this direction.
The actual length is not that critical. The extra 3mm comes from the 1.5mm on each side the plates are away from the face of the y-axis c-beam. On the original build the 3mm longer rail allowed the y-axis rails to sit flush with the outside edge of the base frame for easy squaring of the machine. The 3mm can also be handled by insetting the y-axis rails 1.5mm for a total of 3mm. If you take a look at Marks Sketchup model he shows the inset y-axis rail option and my original Sketchup model shows the 503mm long x-axis c-beam. Both options work well.
With the y-axis rails flush on the base frame and x-axis rail length equal to the base width, the plates are forced out of square like so /___\ causing inaccuracy and undue wear and tear on bearings, wheels, nut block, lead screw ect. The Openbuilds v-slot / c-beam systems are very modular and as long as the proper care is taken during assembly to ensure everything is square and parallel you can make the rails any length you need.
Will the SPHINX end plates be made available separately so that I can mount them on my machine?

Interesting that didn't go with the 2" taller and double nut version of the plates. Any reason why?
Guess I will have to pay attention to when openbuild sales happen now. Was contemplating cobbling one of these together.With a bundle now available, price is becoming my only point of resistance.
@Kyo and I talked about this, and from what we gathered from the taller builds out there is that deflection seemed to be an issue with the 2" taller plates. We wanted to maintain the low profile stout nature of the original design so we settled there. On the nut blocks the single anti backlash does just fine on its own so we saw no need for the extra cost there.

I just saw the wiring video. The limit switch placement is killing a lot of travel. I made my own limit switch mounting plates, but you should still be able to rotate the included plates by 90. That's about an inch (25mm) of extra travel. The Z kills a lot too.
Include a tiny offset plate and you can use every mm of available length. I don't have a clear picture (I can grab one later), but with the little offset plate and a simple standoff, you can put the limit switch on the side instead of directly in the travel. That get's you all the way up to the grub screw on the lead screw lock collar.

Sphinx Cable Chain and Limit Switch Accessory Set
In the build, am I only seeing one limit switch per axis ? should there be not two for each direction ?
It's a good practice to have two limit switches on each axis, one on each end, but many builder leave one out and keep only one, for the homing. I have two switches per axis on my machine. AND...two emergency stop switches.
that is what I am planning to do.
How much does the Sphinx 55 weigh? I see on page 4 of Kyo's C-Beam Sphinx that his weighs about 70lbs. Is that about the weight of this machine? I know the weight can vary a bit depending on the optional hardware you have on it, but it would be nice to see an approximate weight listed in the specs for each of the machines.
Hello David. The Sphinx 55 shipping weight is approx. 45 Lbs. for the Bundle, Wiring Kit, Power Supply Bundle and Stepper Motors. Thanks for the feedback on the weights. We will look into getting this information added.
Cool, thanks for the info. I like that weight a lot better than the 70lbs I was thinking it might be.
It could well be 70 pounds after adding the spoilboard. MDF is heavy.
I think most Sphinx builds will come in under the weight of my original build. When I measured the weight of my machine. I had a 1/2" cast mic 6 tooling plate as the base bed of the machine topped with two additional 1/2" thick MDF spoiler boards to reduce the Z-axis. Those three plates added a fair bit of weight to the machine.
The shipping weight listed didn't include the Spindle either which will also add a few pounds
After asking that question, I remembered that plate you had put in the bottom & figured that was the extra weight. I have some MDF board, so have an idea of how much extra that weighs. Thanks for the info.
I'm just about to receive all the hardware and electronics parts for my Sphinx 55 build. I would first like to thanks for the design of this machine!
I didn't buy the Sphinx plates set yet because I waited for all the other parts to arrive with peace from China, and now I'm ready to purchase the plates.
Will you recommend buying the OpenBuilds plates version or Kyo's version? What are the pros and cons of each?
I also saw that the OpenBuilds ones are rated as version 7, what are the main differences from Kyo's version?
I do not sale any plates, Chris and Openbuilds both provide a quality plate set. I can not recommend any of the plate sets from aliexpress. The OpenBuilds Sphinx plate set is the cheaper option and comes with quality support from OpenBuilds. This plate set has a couple design revisions to assist with manufacturing no changes that should affect your build.
