    Greetings,
I am looking forward to building a large 1500mm x 3000mm router. I am not looking forward to taking up that much floor space. Has anyone here tried to build a vertical or near vertical machine bed?

The idea would be the same basic design as the traditional bed just rotated 90 degrees. Similar to the large plywood cutters or laser engravers.

To offset the weight of the machine head a counter weight system could be used. I am sure there are other technical details that would need to be over come however; if this is feasible it would save a lot of floor space.

If you're going vertical, consider constant force springs rather than counterweights. This greatly reduces the inertial mass the motors have to overcome.
