I need help! I am new to CNC. I recently finished a CNC plasma cutting table build. The control board is the Arduino Uno R3 flashed with GRBL. The table is a three-axis with z being a touch-off. There is no torch height control. I designed a simple 2" x 4" plate with 4 .325 in. holes in Fusion 360. I am using Openbuilds CNC: GRBL/Black box post controller. The person that helped me said I had to edit the Post controller to get the Z axis to touch off and retract between cuts. These are the edits he told me to make. At position 250 change plasma probe distance from 30 to 150. At position 252 change plasma probe rate from 100 to 150. Then he had me comment out lines 821, 822, 823, 824 with( 2 //). After that, the Z axis would function with touch-off and retract. When I went through all the steps in Fusion 360 and went to post it came up with NC code failed to post. The error was: The top height must be below the plasma pierce height: Error at line 842. I have tried everything, he had me uninstall Fusion 360 and reinstall. Then uninstall Openbuilds post controller and reinstall it. No change still get errors. I have the torch top height set at 0.045. I don't know where in Fusion 360 the pierce height even is. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you, Craig

Which version of the post have you got? latest is v1.0.0.36 and I will be using that for any explanations.

Why would you reinstall when all you need to do is change some heights in your cut parameters in Fusion360?
I am not near Fusion now, maybe I will post some screenshots later that show it, if the videos below don't help you out.

Here GitHub - OpenBuilds/OpenBuilds-Fusion360-Postprocessor: Post Processor for Fusion 360 for use with OpenBuilds Machines running Grbl 1.1 you get some intructions for plasma touch off linked here
    OpenBuilds-Fusion360-Postprocessor/README-plasma.md at master · OpenBuilds/OpenBuilds-Fusion360-Postprocessor

Why remove the retract code? Is it becuase your machine has no homing switches?
The correct solution is to fake the home , it will provide a safer environment for you and your equipment.

    anyhow, back to adjusting heights.....

you are looking for the linking tab for the pierce height, this sets how high the tool will be during piercing
    plasma-pierce-height.png

set the stock top to the same as the model top (no stock offsets), then set the cut height like this with a positive offset.
this sets how high the tool will be during cutting
    plasma-stock-top.png

you can override the pierce height in the post options because for some cuts the pierce height settings also affects the linking moves.

if you hover your mouse over each of the option edit boxes in turn they will pop up some help

Thank you very much. Like I said I am very new to CNC. Those settings I gave you came from the guy I bought the plans from. I did finally get it to post. Now my issues are it touches off and goes up, but the torch tip is right down on the stock scraping. Thanks,Craig

Yes my machine has no homing switches or limit switches. There is only a switch on the Z axis. I will send you a pic of the setup.

then please follow the link I gave you to the 'fake the home' instructions and do it everytime you turn the machine on, that will solve your scraping problem and also make the whole thing safer to operate

Hi, I have fixed most of the problems I was having. Now I have some new ones. I designed a simple 2-inch by 3-inch plate with 5 holes. The holes cut but they are not perfectly round. I measured the dimensions of the plate after cutting it. It measured 2 and 15/16 by 1 and 15/16. Thanks, Craig

    1) check mechanicals (setscrews on shaft couplers tight, wheels adjusted, machine as solid as can be)
    2) then check Calibration (Wizards and Tools menu)

I checked the mechanicals, they were all good. I went through the X and Y calibration in the wizard. They were both 100mm travel exactly. I have attached my set ups and my post-processing settings. I tried another 2-inch x 2-inch square. It cut both sides 1 15/16's.

next to check is the 'cutter size'. ie the actual size of the kerf that is being cut and set that in the tool setup in Fusion.
it uses the kerf width to set the offset when it generates the Gcode.

Plasma? Replace tip and electrode (worn tips often reason for cut artifacts)
Also double check your kerf is configured correctly

    Hello
    I Have a similar problème
When i do the set zéro after probing de z-axe that have a limites switch.
Then i start the job for the first holl it go's à the good height after the sencond holl it go's up and after that up again en up and up and block it dosent do the probing for each cut that it suppos to do

this is (or was) common with GRBL controllers, they are little too sensitive to arc endpoint errors.
and that tells me we have a solution for you. you have V1.0.36 and the current version is V1.0.37 which has significant improvements in it specially for preventing arc errors so please upgrade and regenerate your Gcode and test and let us know if you have further problems
    docs:software:fusion360 [OpenBuilds Documentation]

However, I cannot see any actual error in the arc coordinates so I have to think of other possible causes and all I have come up with is a USB communication error caused by EMI.
It is a plasma cutter after all and that line of code is where the arc has just burned through and has just moved closer to the material.
Whether that causes any special EMI or not is hard to say, but it is possible, so if you can run it with the plasma off that might tell us more about what is going on.
Maybe the probe switch wiring needs to be shielded and filtered if it is not already?[/quote][/QUOTE]

    Hello
I did the update of the GRBL post-prossesor to V1.0.37 and a redid the job. But got the same error and this time de plasma cutter was off.
    upload_2023-11-13_15-44-27.png
the relais clicked so the plasmas could start(power off plasma is off) that for me is ok
The wire hare all shielded Z-switche motors and i did instal a EMI on the power sorce of the control box. juste to try to eliminate the fréquence.
here are my setting on Fusion360 im running out of ideas
    this is the 2D profile

    this is the NC program

    upload_2023-11-13_15-50-18.png

And this is the New Gcode

    Thank you for your help

It seam's that it is not using the touch prob routine.
it dosent confirme with the z axis switch at eatch cut that it has to do so it goes down a litle bit and after more up until it jams
i did 2X 2Dprofilt to split the job in two so one does the small holes and the other the bigger outline cut.
With this the alarm desaperd. but stil the z-axe goes up and up and up.

    Thanks

it does use the probe routine, 42 times in fact.
lets look at what the gcode is doing
    Code:

    G0 Z1.5 ; set Z to 1.5 high from the probed+offset position

    X57.756 Y103.584 I0.827 J1.28 ; leadout arc
    M5 ; torch off
G0 X56.072 Y146.018 ; move to start of new cut
    and so on

technically speaking there should be a retract after the torch off commands and I will check later as to why there is not. This may be causing a problem because the torch is only 0.5mm away from the plate when the probe starts, may be even less if the plate is not flat and happens to be a high spot .

Please fake the home (if you do not do this already) and run it again, Z home should be at the top of travel.
I also note that the G38 commands do not have P words and while the default is to change the current WCS if there is no P word, maybe they really are needed so I will add that to the postprocessor tonight

come to think of it, that is a very long staydown setting and that might be causing the lack of retracts between probes/cut starts.
since it is probing down anyway having it retract to 5mm clearance will not slow down your job much.
so turn off 'keep nozzle down' and/or set the maximum staydown distance to 20mm.

then, your 'tolerance' and 'smoothing tolerance' are very very small. (0.0004mm)
your machine probably cannot even do that as a single step so it is not helping you at all.
my machines step size is 0.025mm so I set tolerance to that, and smoothing to 3 or 4 times that.

The fake homing is when go to the start position of the job and then do the set zero ?
If yes that is what a do at every time to start de job.

I did the teste to remouve de keep nozzle down and it is stil not working.
At the begenning of the job it dosent do the first toch off for the cut and after that it start cutting and the next cut not toching the plate to teste the probe.

I dont now if this could help but it is a JD's garage plasma CNC.

and sorry for my bad english

No, when you set XYZ zero (in the same place on your workpiece as you set the origin in your cam software) you are setting the Workplace Co-ordinate System (WCS) zero. That is recorded by the controller as an offset from the HOME position which is setting the Machine Co-ordinate System (MCS).
MCS home (together with the max dimension settings for each axis) tells your controller where all the edges and corners of your machine's workspace are, WCS zero tells your controller whereabouts in that workspace you put the workpiece.
You need to How to 'Fake the home' if you haven't got switches that allow you to set a homing position. Setting a home position (regardless of where you put any switches if you have them) sets the back, right, up corner of your machine's workspace as the maxima for each axis. Confusingly for beginners that is normally zero - the machine co-ordinates become more negative as you move away from that corner.

    Alex.

Rather than Fake the home, just spend the couple bucks and get switches. No need to go through the pain of remembering to "fake it"
Fake it till you make it (try it now, see how big a pain it is, then order couple Xtension Limit Switch Kit)
I really wish we'd just stop recommending the faking and recommend switches. Do it right

I think I know the problem.
You have connected the switch on Z that senses the contact to the *Z-limit switch input*.
It must be connected to the 'probe' input.

Same concept. Use the probe pin, not the Endstop pins.
    Arduino pinout here: Connecting Grbl
