Hello all, I am planning my next build. I was thinking of going with the open rail and the steel v wheels instead of the V slot and the Solid V wheel. Is there any advantage to this? Obviously the steel wheels will be more sturdy than the delrin solid V wheels, but other than that is there any advantage? Thanks. Regards Charlie M.
Openrail YES but steel wheels probably not, being as Openrail is aluminum and would wear out pretty quick.... A upside to using Openrail is the track doesn't get fouled with sawdust and chips when cutting. If you plan on staying with the belt drive you'll need to look into maybe using idler wheels, also the wheel spacing is different for Openrail plates then V slot. I use the Xtreme wheels with good results on Openrail.. Check out my build here... Area 51 F-117 CNC Gerald
Hi Thanks for the info. I like your rebuild. I was thinking of going with the rack and pinion drive system. Instead of steel would the extream V be a better choice? Do you have a BOM put together yet ? Thanks. Charlie
Thanks! As far as I know steel would be a bad choice to use on aluminum rails, the wear would be excessive. I have the steel v wheels on my large machine but it rides on steel rails. I Xtreme wheels wouldn't damage the rail. I'm working on a BOM now. Stay tuned !!
