due to the length of my rail i cannot get a leadscrew, for the time being i need to figure a way to clamp the gantry to the rail at my desired position manually.

i have seen the Tnuts available on the website, was thinking maybe there would be a way to utilise that to clamp the gantry to the rail, or maybe someone here has a better alternative?

    thanks in advance

Use a leadscrew anyway but add sprung dampers along the length and ploughs to the carriage to minimise whipping?

    Pneumatic/belleville washer brake?

Use a screw to actuate another screw clamp brake with maximum torque (think a lever lock on a machine, operated by a leadscrew pulling it tight from the end)?

Drive the belt/chain with worm drives so they can't back-drive (much)?

Use closed loop feedback and active position holding?

Tons of methods, I'm sure there are a bunch more too. Some of them could be combined, too.
