Make sure to flash the 2-axes firmware from Wizards and Tools > Firmware flashing tool

As is, its waiting for a non existant Z to home first

In the instructions for flashing it says to hold down the mode button and then hit reset.. Where is the mode button?

No, that's for the Interface (Reading the wrong instructions)

Your BlackBox is the one that needs to know its running a 2-axes machine. Plug it in, run CONTROL > Wizards and Tools > Firmware flashing Tool > Under machine Style > Select 2 Axes CNC/Laser with Z-Axis Homing Disabled. Note its on the BlackBox 4X Tab.

Will it say it did something under console? I did what you just showed me and nothing happened. The firmware update screen just closed

That did it! Thanks... Now I am stuck on something else. Perhaps I should explain what I am doing. I have a longarm sewing machine and I am trying to load quilting designs as gcode for the cnc machine I build to stitch out for me. I have created the gcode, loaded it into openbuilds, even run the simulation and all looks good. But when I hit run it takes off super fast in some direction and runs into the limit switches. I have homed the machine. I have also made the gcode pattern smaller than the actual working space. Any thoughts?

    Homing sets Machine Coordinates
Then SetZero sets the Work Coordinates
You need to do both so the machine knows where the origin of the work is as well

    So 1- home the machine
    2- setzero
    3- run program
    ?

Correct. Though just to reiterate at step 2 jog to where the origin should be and then set zero

SetZero location is stored in eeprom so if your work zero is always the same, you can skip step 2.

Seems I am still having problems. I wasnt able to get it to work with openbuilds control so someone recommened I try Lightburn. I am now trying a program Lightburn with my blackbox. Someone is trying to help me. But I cant get it to run over there either. Should the blackbox and lightburn work together? My jogging commands arent recognized properly. I say go right and it does.. I say go left and it continuously goes right... same idea for front to back.

Checkout docs.openbuilds.com - we have our Lightburn setup instructions there

I'd use CONTROL to set things up first. Random direction changes indicate motor wiring: see docs:blackbox:faq-identify-motor-coils [OpenBuilds Documentation]

Once I get things set up can I go back and forth between the two programs or are the settings for the blackbox different for each program and would require adjustments if I were to change to another program?

Normally no, both are just Grbl hosts at that point. All Grbl configs are stored in the EEPROM on-chip inside the controller.
