I have the probe setup and in running the troubleshooter it indicates that it is working. However, when I try to initiate a probe nothing happens (a few icons are grayed out) and the only way to get the machine working again is to press abort. $19 is set to 0. Does this need to be set to 1? Suggestions always welcome.

I am using the X32. I upgraded the firmware. Then I re-ran the probe cycle after re-homing my machine. This time the bit moved to the center of the probe plate and the stopped and threw an error: Error 9-gcode locked out during alarm or jog state. This was accompanied with an Alarm2 error: gcode motion target exceeds machine travel. I am to assume that I need to reset the soft limit for the z-axis since that was the the first step in the probe cycle?

Disable Soft Limits, or set the Z axis Max Travel larger. Probe being an unknown destination commands a move longer than you'd expect, which may exceed Z Max Travel

That did the trick. However, I have some openbuild limit switches that I could rewire and place in parallel for all axis, instead of proximity switches and soft limits - would you recommend that?

Yes, we do recommend our switches. Much easier to use with Hard Limits on both ends
