    Hi Kevin,
    You asked about using the two motors on the X axis, I think you mean the Y? the Y is front to back the X is side to side...
    Anyway you need to use discrete drivers for the high torque motors such as the one Openbuilds sells that can do 3 amps.
    As for the controller all you need is an Arduino Uno a screw shield (to make connections easy) and GRBL with Universal G-code Sender or Estlcam for control.
    There are many other ways to do this, but these example is tried and tested and you can find plenty of support for this setup here as it is typical.

    To drive the Nema 23's I would go with an industrial grade driver like the IM483's they are an older driver but used and NOS can be found on eBay for a fair price. I purchased 8 of them 10 or so years ago for $85 each I have used the same 4 drivers all these years without issue. The software I use is Mach 3 on my windows computer and I have LinuxCNC on my bootable Ubuntu thumb drive that I use when I want a change
