when Probing for Z only using the OB xyz, is it automatic or di I hit zero when the light comes on? I was working with it yesterday, the light came on but the z travel did not stop, I was practicing on foam so I had some relief. Thanks

    That would be Wiring

Test your probe using the Troubleshooting tab

@petervanderwalt its function properly when probing all three axis ? and if the light comes on would that not mean it is making the connection?

The LEDs indicate within the probe itself, contact is made - but does not absolutely mean Grbl got the signal too. Checking in software is better proof the Grbl received the signal (in case wire on connector near controller is badly wired for example)

    yes, as demo'd here

Example of me testing contact between plate and endmill (with magnet clipped to endmill too)
    probe test.gif

And just confirmed on a machine here in the lab, with latest version v1.0.250, with OpenBuilds XYZ Probe Plus, both the Auto and XYZ routines ran without a problem :)

I'll post here, not creating a new thread, as it might be somewhat similar. I've made my own Z-Probe, tested it with the software and all is working as expected, as soon the mill touches the probe it bounces back and waits.

Ive printed a case, 8.5mm for a pcb laminate which is 1.5 so the total height of the probe is 10mm (9.97mm to be exact according to my calliper).

After setting all of this I've started the Probe option, and its succesful.

As you can se it did set the Z axis to 14.99mm. As I understand it took 10mm from my probe settings, and added 5mm to that. Without starting a work I decided to check this and move the Z axis a little to actually check if it will touch the work surface when I bring it down 15mm. But after that I notice something strange.

I moved the machine by 0.1mm increment, and it moved by 3.22mm, which got me kinda confused, so I moved it again, this time with 1mm increment chosen

And it moved to 22.07mm, this is super confusing for me, because without using the probe wizard, the increments are super fine, I've double checked that when I disconnect the machine. Connect to it again, put a measure next to the Z axis, it's all good 10mm are 10mm, 1mm is 1mm, and 0.1mm is 0.1 (Ive checked by clicking it 10 times to notice the 1mm change on measure).

So this got me scared, and I'm affraid to start any work on the machine, as it got me thinking that Z-probing actually makes some dizzy things to the Z axis controls.

Any idea what can be happening here? Attaching my global settings just in case, but I've got them on default, and jugging the machine with those seem to work fine till the moment I touch Z-probing.

Your switch under the Jog buttons is on Continuous. Switch to Incremental, to move in Increments

The 14.99 vs 15 is just rounding on the display (might be 14.9999999999 because of step resolution)

I am using the x,y,z probe for material that is 1mm thick. For the z height I would need to lower it by how much more? i.e. the x,y,z, probe is 12mm in thickness but how much is the lip thingy?

3mm. The thick part of the plate is 9mm

Brilliant Peter - thanks for what is obvious to me now. Love how looking at the problem a different way gets a simpler answer and approach.

My CNC router has CNC xPro V3 controller and a Z-probe tool. I had to have my computer's Windows 10 re-installed. I'm trying to configure my machine using custom machine configuration. The Z-Probe Wizard is not working properly. I choose custom XYZ probe and tried to enter correct values. I tried to use Z-Probe but the machine moves the router bit 10mm in X and Y direction before moving down in Z direction. After thiis, the machine hits the X-limit switch and gives me error message. How can I fix the problem?

Hey Jeff - I'm a bit confused by your post. Several places you only mention Z (and a Z probe tool) so I'm assuming that you only want to probe Z. If that's the case, then when you click on Probe to bring up the wizard, remember to also click on Z Zero tab. That will only probe in z and not move in x and y.

Before the IT guy install a new SSD drive into my computer and re-install Windows 10, he made the original HDD "Drive D" so that I can re-install some of my software and copy some data files back. I went into the folder where OB Control is installed on the "Drive D", copied the files to new folder where OB Control is installed on the "Drive C", and ran OB Control. The Z-probe now worked properly. The fresh install of OB Control doesn't have Z-probe section in the wizard. The OB Control that I copied over the fresh install has Z-probe section in the wizard.
