      About the ooznest OX

The ooznest OX CNC Machine is based on the OX CNC Machine designed by Mark Carew, and it incorporates many upgrades from this community.

The ooznest OX CNC Machine makes full use of the V-Slot Extrusion system. It keeps the original extrusion layout used in the OX, plus Mark's built up spoiler board modification.

The kit uses a total of 30 Solid Delrin or Xtreme V Wheels, this includes the two extra wheels used on the extended Z-Axis. This Z-Axis V-Slot extrusion is 200mm.

The plate designs in our kit are based on the originals. However we have added our own touches to increase the performance and design of the machine. On the Y-Axis we have added an inner wheel brace, to improve performance and help to shield the wheels from cutting debris. Like the OX AI, we wanted no exposed extrusions, therefore we have designed custom NEMA23 threaded rod mounts, as well as Y-Axis end plates, and 20x40 end caps.

Our full kit uses the popular CNC xPro controller, with a cable carrier system for the X and Y Axis. As well as a 24V 350W Power supply with a complete cover with a volt meter and XT60 Outputs.

      Instructions and Part Files

Mark Carew made some excellent build videos for the original OX. These videos alone could have been enough to build our OX. However we wanted to make it even easier. Therefore we have made a complete written instruction manual, with IKEA'eske assembly diagrams. Our manual follows Mark's videos as much as possible.

The Appendix of the instruction manual has a full parts list for the standard 750 x 500mm OX. A excel file is also provided for the standard size. For a bigger version, only the V-Slot, ACME Lead Screw, GT3 Belt, and number of spoiler board supports is different. The standard size, includes the parts list for one spoiler board support. If you plan to go bigger or smaller, the section below will help you to buy the correct extrusions.

Provided above are Step Files and DXF files for the plates. We have also put together some drawings for plates, showing the main dimensions. The file named “Summary.pdf”, summarizes all the plates, and the quantities needed per set.

We have also added all the 3D Printable stl's for our controller mount, cable carrier mounts, and PSU Cover. As well as the instruction manual need to go from a mechanical machine to a fully working machine. This covers assembling the cable carriers, building the PSU Cover, connecting the xPro, and setting up the software.

      Guide to buying the V-Slot

First you need to decide on the X & Y cutting area you require.

For the X-Axis you will need 2 x 20x60mm & 1 x 20x40mm V-Slot Extrusions. The length needed for these extrusions, is your required X cutting length + 180mm. For example, if you need to be able to cut 1000mm in the X direction, you will need the extrusions to be 1180mm.

For the Y-Axis you will need 2 x 20x80mm V-Slot Extrusions. The length needed for these extrusions, is your required Y cutting length + 225mm. For example, if you need to be able to cut 1000mm in the Y direction, you will need the extrusions to be 1225mm.

For the base, that supports the Y-Axis will need 4 x 20x40mm V-Slot Extrusions. The length for two of these extrusions, is your required X cutting length + 174mm. For the other two extrusions, the length is your required X cutting length + 134mm. For example, if you need to be able to cut 1000mm in the X direction, you will need the two of these extrusions to be 1174mm, and the other two to be 1134mm.

For the spoiler board supports you will need a minimum of 1 x 20x80mm V-Slot Extrusions, add additional ones as necessary. The length needed for these extrusions, is your required Y cutting length + 185mm. For example, if you need to be able to cut 1000mm in the Y direction, you will need the extrusions to be 1185mm.

The Z-Axis requires 1 x 20x60mm V-Slot Extrusion. This can be made as big or as small as required. However a length of 200mm is the maximum without hitting the spoiler board supports. The length of the ACME Lead screw for Z-Axis, is the length of your Z-Axis Extrusion + 23mm.

You will need 3 lengths of GT3 Belt, 1 for the X-Axis and 2 for the Y-Axis. The length of the belt needs to be the length of the extrusion on that Axis + 200mm.

      The “Sales” Bit

We designed this kit due to the number of requests for quotes we got for the OX CNC Machine. Therefore, we are now offering a Full Kit, Mechanical Kit, Plates Kit and various add-on kits on our website. These kits can be found by following this link: OX CNC Full Kit | Everything For A Hobby CNC Machine

All the V-Slot Extrusions and Mechanical Parts used in our kits, and on our website, come direct from Openbuildspartstore. Therefore, you can be sure you are supporting them :).

      Credits

We would like to give a big thank you to Mark Carew and Openbuilds part store for designing an excellent CNC Machine and V-Slot system, which they have allowed to be freely shared, remixed, and sold. We would also like to thank the Openbuilds and wider community for sharing their upgrades to make the OX even better.
