    Hello,

I have a lead 1010, worked ok for a while but the last time I ran a job, the tool plunged in way to much towards the end of the job.
Since then I noticed the z axis is only working properly close to home position. If i go further than 300mm in X and Y from home Z goes to hell.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

Have you checked your wiring to see if maybe there is a loose connection or a short? Maybe when the wire is bent in a position other than how it is at the "home" position it causes a short making the motor behave erratically.

so you are saying that when the tool is moved 'far' away from home, Z acts weirdly. (knwoing exactyl what it does would help us analyse....)
I see cable chains in your pictures.
The Z cable is in that cable chain, maybe 2 of them.
I think we can conclude that the motion of the cable in the cable chain, or near the ends where it flexes, might just be the problem.
I would disconnect the Z cable from the blackbox (power off! ) and from the Z motor, connect a torch bulb so it is powered through that wire (1), then jog the machine around and see if the torch bulb flickers at all.
I would do this using 2 pairs at a time, so 2 tests to check all 4 motor wires.

    (1) to do this I would put a jumper across 2 wires at the motor end then wire the torch battery and bulb to the other end, feeding throguh those same 2 wires. now the torch should be on all the time unless there is a problem with a wire as it flexes, jogging the machine around will flex the wires for us.

    Hello David,

    Thanks for your reply.

Yes, 2 cables in the chain, z motor and z switch.
4 cables in the chain to the side of the machine.
I opened the chain with the 4 cables and looked at the z cable.
I see lumps in it and when I move it by hand a little I hear the motor clicking like when I
    power up.
I' ll find a new cable and replace it.
Will let you know how it goes.

    Eureka!
    It's working again.
I cut the cable after the lump and wired it to the motor, I had extra length on this one.

Thank you both for the much appreciated help!
