OpenBuilds CAM different cut strategy for holes

Would it be possible to support depth first hole cutting strategies where the bit is first plunged to the full depth of the hole and then in a narrow spiral moved outwards to finish the hole rather than doing a succession of shallow circular cuts at increasing depth?

For small holes that are up to about twice the diameter of the cutting bit the depth-first strategy would increase tool lifetime because not all the cutting is done with the tip of the tool.

This might also make sense for pockets in general but is certainly harder to implement for an arbitrarily shaped pocket. For a hole or perhaps even any convex shape this should be rather simple.

 

Got it. It was just a suggestion. I understand if full-featured trochoidal milling strategies are not in the development plan. But setting up a plunge and spiral wouldn't be that hard. It is a low-hanging fruit that would make a nice tool even nicer.
