Nema 23 high torque

    Hello, after some search, how can i set up current ajustement for nema 23 in the blackbox ? Is it possible to take measure to set up exactly the current ? Where i can measure? I dont like the « turn up and look overheat »

    how work the reverse pin ? Is it interesting to use it with vfd ?

    The output of a stepper driver is a series of pulses. If microstepping it's a series of pulses of varying magnitude - you can't easily measure it.

    Ok so how can i do to use optimal high torque ? Output current of blackbox is 3,2A Max and my nema23 3.0 so my potentiometer have to be nearly in maxium ?

    Use the procedure from docs.openbuilds.com please. Motor current rating (3A) is the Max! Setting it to that can damage motor long term.

    I réad documentation but i dont Understand how i can ajust the current perfectly. So, peter how would you do to get thé better of the high torque nema with no dammage

    Start about halfway, run some jobs. Do you have stalling? If not, done. If you stall, add a little more current until it doesnt stall.

    If you turn it up too far either the motor will get hot (warm is OK, hot isnt) or the red exclamation LED on front of BlackBox will come on telling you driver went into protection mode. Also disables driver.

    BlackBox has an offset scale. Far left is 1.2A, far right is 3.2A. So as the start is offset its not as sensitive to adjustment like badly designed interfaces where just a 2 deg turn makes an difference. Dont overthink it, if the machine runs like a beast, you got it right.

    It would be very helpful to have precisely this information in the official docs for the BlackBox. For someone assembling their first CNC machine, the instructions there are quite vague (All it says is, "Adjust the current until you can no longer stall the motor under normal operating conditions.").

    Which is easier for someone to understand have no concept of electrical current :)

    But thanks for the feedback we will consider it for a future update

    For what it's worth, you could leave off the last paragraph about the offset scale. The first two paragraphs are golden, even for those who don't understand electrical current.

    I think this thred has answered my question. Can the blackbox run NEMA 23 (high torque)? By the sounds of it, it can?

    Yes, more than capable. High Torque motors are 3A max. BlackBox is 3.2A Max
