Just got a blackbox today to power my workbee CNC (1500x1500)

Firstly I was a little disappointed it didn't come pre assembled as they are advertised as 'plug&play' but n big issue, wasn't hard to assemble and didn't take long

Hooked it all up, connected to USB, and 2 things where wrong

    1. The Laptop (also tried on my PC, same issue) does not seem to recognise anything is plugged in, despite giving power to the box. Have tried with and without the 24v psu connected/switched on.

    2. When the power supply is on and the box is on then I connect the USB lead, the stepper motors make a humming/buzzing noise until i disconnect either the power or the USB lead. If I connect the USB first then turn it on, they make a very high pitch ring.

I have the correct drivers installed from the opensource page.
Can someone please help as I am going crazy here, bought the box to make things work nice and easy!!

    1) Disconnect everything except USB. Wiring mistakes can prevent the board from running
    2) With just USB connected, test communiction
    3) if it connects then, recheck wiring you have a short somewhere (most likely limit switches)
    4) If not, paste the Serial Log for us to help check for clues

Noise from motors is expected, nothing odd there (modern stepper drivers employ a constant current chopper drive signal, with a stepped sine wave output which does cause audible noise)

    - Do you have another PC to test from?
    - No yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager?
    - Try a different USB cable?

Tried on laptop, bought home and now have laptop and pc infront of me, tried on both.
Nothing at all in device manager, doesn't even refresh when plugged in/unplugged.
Will try a different USB cable on the PC, but tried 2 on the laptop with no success

Assuming this is the serial log?

Serial log is more useful once device shows up in Device manager, so we need to get side sorted first.
That's the most basic level, basic+usb cable, delivers 5v over USB, FTDI chip starts up and enumerates as USB to Serial Port under Ports in device manager
Every board prior to shipping does get programmed over USB - its the last QA step before they ship, so at least we know it did work, just got see why it doesn't on yours.

Best next bet yes, could be a bad cable.

Out of interest sake with just USB connected (everything else disconnected) does any LEDs light up on it? Is it a v2.6 board?

    Tried another cable again, nothing.

Lights coming on (only usb connected): USB logo : Red, Motors Enabled: Green, Tool On: Green.

Board is a brand spanker, delivered new yesterday, not sure how i tell what version it is?

    It's printed on the PCBs.

Reach out to http://support.openbuilds.com/support/home with an RMA request, for a new Brains Board. Refer to a link of this thread to help ease the process.
