Hello everyone. My name is Rick and this is my first post. I didn't know where to post this but I have a question about the black plates on OpenBuilds CNC's. I watched the first video, where the person on the video was describing the material these black plates are made of. He called it something that sounded like Drylight..but I couldn't really make out what he said. He described it as a fiberglass/phenolic. Can someone tell me what this material is called? Thank you.

Back in the day (Old OX videos 6-7 years ago) was phenolic, these days its Aluminum.

If you do want the phenolic, google for "machinable phenolic sheets"

Garolite is the word you’re looking for. But as Peter notes it really hasn’t been used since the Ox.

Thanks, I couldn't even remember it thats how long ago I last used it.
PS: Watch out for the fiberglass from it, bad for lungs

Hi guys. Thanks so much for the info. Reason I asked, I have some projects that I thought maybe this product would be good for. But aluminum would probably be better. Have to wait till I build or buy a CNC though. Right now I'm researching one axis CNC stuff for a router lift and table saw fence. I'll be back for questions on those, but I'll post them in an appropriate section. Thanks again. Btw, maybe you should take down those videos if they are that old. As a nube to CNC, I thought the info was state of the art. Still learned a lot though.

Lots of old machines out in the field. Still relevant to the existing owners. The video dates are shown on Youtube, below the video title

I see Rick’s point here. Unfortunately the way the forum software is written it updates the publishing date every time even the most minor change is made to a build. So he’s looking at the Ox which appears to date back to August 30, 2017 thinking it’s a relatively current build. And if you’re watching the videos from the build page you won’t see a date on them. Really no good answer here other to suggest checking the date on the first discussion post and that’s not something that new users tend to gravitate to.

OK fair enough, but still, we can't take them down :)
