I am asked by someome to make a sign for her. I have Dewalt DW618 router and VCrave Pro. What's the best feed rate, feed speed, and deep of cut for 1/16" bit for hardwood?
The best is not to Rather, rough out with something bigger like a 1/4 inch or you'll take forever, signs tend to be bigger pieces. Then come in with the smaller bit and clean up the corners (most CAMs allows that sort of cleanup) Chart: sharkbits [OpenBuilds Documentation]
I presume you'll rough out with a bigger bit, but you will still need to know what to run the 1/16" bit at. How hard is your hardwood? For reference, I've just done some inlay work with a 0.6mm bit (0.023") in ebony. My depth of cut was equivalent to cutter diameter/2, so 0.3mm (0.012"); Feed 0.005mm per tooth (0.0002") which, for a 2 flute cutter at my maximum spindle speed of 12,000 RPM meant a feed rate of 120mm/min (4.7" / min). I could get away with double the depth of cut and 60% faster feedrate with the same bit in indian rosewood (but it broke at those settings in ebony). As a starting point, translating my ebony settings to a 1/16" cutter (assuming 2 flutes) at 24,000 RPM (assuming this is the maximum speed of your router) gives 1/32" depth of cut and ~10"/minute feed rate. Nice fretboard design. I began building an acoustic guitar couple years ago. Completed the soundboard, back, bracing, rosette. Glued up the neck and headstock blank, routed for the truss rod. Unfortunately, life took some unexpected turns, I had to abandon the project and I probably won’t get back to it (but I’m keeping all of my parts just in case!). Anyway, I sure do appreciate a well-crafted guitar, acoustic or electric.
The sign has letters about 1/2" high. The sign will be on oak board. Are there single-line fonts similar to Times-Roman font?
I would just import the image into Sketchup and draw around it, that pixelation is going to defeat any automated conversion to vector format.
I already draw around the lines and two persons. I entered text. The lines, persons, and the big "K" are OK using 1/8" bit. The text won't appear unless I use 1/16" bit and I don't want to break 1/16" bits.
