The above happens with both short and long cables. After 5 minutes of it spewing "ok", it displays this:

After swapping back and forth between the short and long cables, it seems to be working at the moment (with either cable).
As I suspected, using a shorter cable (the ~5' one that came with the bb) did not fix the problem. Also I seem to be stuck in the upgrade infinite...
