Lithophanes are artworks created in thin material, that can only be seen when the material is illuminated from the back side. The trick is to machine a relief: the thinner the material, the more light will come through. The DeskProto CAM software will convert a digital image to such 3D relief, and can use that to machine a flat lithophane or a pipe lithophane.

This tutorial video teaches you how to create a flat lithophane, using the Free Edition of DeskProto V7. We used a famous Dutch painting by Vermeer as image: "Girl with a pearl Earring". You can of course use any picture that you want. Subtitles are available and can be switched on, in English and in Dutch.
