I was skimming through my model collection and decided this would look really nice carved into a Cherry wood blank I had glued up recently. Model was purchased from Etsy. 3d STL Model for CNC Router Engraver Carving Machine Relief Artcam Aspire "Ship in Frame" CNC files

It has been hot and filled with pop up storms around here for weeks. The humidity levels are up and down, which really does a number on wood.

I started carving this, and let the machine run until evening, paused it and restarted it the next morning. After a few hours, I went to check on it, ( I am constantly monitoring with a video feed if I leave the shop! I also have VNC viewer up and running on my PC to stop the job as well, if need be) I noticed the wood was starting to warp up on me. I didn't have it screwed down to the spoil board as I usually do. Instead, I only had blocks holding around the outside perimeter.

When the wood started warping upwards, it allowed space between my blocks and the work piece. It also caused sections of the work piece to become closer to the Z axis than what it started as. I stopped the job, and carefully screwed the work piece down to the spoil board like it should have been in the first place.

I had to modify the g-code a bit to try and compensate for the cutting errors that had taken place, and re-cut/ back track some of what I had already finished. I let the job continue on until it finished. Not a terrible outcome, but a lesson to always do the best you can when securing your work!

There are some noticeable differences in Z depth in some areas, but with the textures of the model, I think it turned out reasonably well.

This is great. The finish really makes the Cherry pop.
Any idea why the board started warping?

Thanks. Yeah, the finish really brought it to life. It's one of my personal favorites. I believe the warping is just from changes in humidity levels. I didn't have it screwed down, and after removing that much material from the stock, it started cupping. Got to love it.

The same model is available on cults3d. I'm going to run one for my nephew here shortly after I finish my current upgrades to my machine. Looks like the one on cults3d needs a bit of work before it is cut ready though...
