Rating:
5/5,
  • Machine Type:
    OpenBuilds LEAD Machine
    Software:
    Vectric
    Electronics:
    OpenBuilds BlackBox
    Machine Time:
Lots of machine time as many inlays were set then overlapped.
    Bit or Laser Size:
    Typically 1/8 and 1/16 End Mills and a 60 degree V-Bit
    Feeds & Speeds:
    Varied by wood type.
    Materials:
Base of sycamore, with fills of colored epoxy for river and trees and inlays of English and black walnut, spanish cedar, sapele, cherry, purple heart, and maple.
North American animal mountain scene inlay for upcoming baby, name & birthdate to be added later. This took a while in terms of hours over the course of three weeks. All female cavity cuts were from within one Vectric file. The mirror inlay male cuts needed to each be separate files in order to account for different pieces of wood sizes, then glued in, then machined flat almost to the surface level of the backing wood before progressing to the next inlay Animal Inlay Scene.jpg . To do it over again I would combine multiple items to reduce the number of steps and tool changeouts. The epoxy fills required 48 hours of hardening before being able to comfortably machine or sand on them. Definitely required the additional use of a bandsaw and scroll saw. Will be presented to the expectant parents very soon.

This is amazing! I can't imagine the amount of planning that had to go into it.
