hi all i have a question about VFD's and how to connect up a spindle i bought a single to 3 phase VFD and a watercooled 3 phase spindle, on the VFD there are connections labeled U,V,W i know 3 of the connections from the spindle have to connect to these connections my question is does it matter which is connected to what as i have seen people connect it differently, i connected mine up yesterday and blew up the VFD
my connections from the spindle were
    1 to V
    2 to W
    3 to U
    4 is nothing
before it blew the VFD was running as i tested it without the spindle connected as soon as i connected it i pressed run and increased the pot the motor moved slightly then the vfd blew, im just trying to figure out if its the VFD, spindle, or my connections that are bad before i buy another VFD and do the same thing.

    many thanks

Only times I've blown up VFDs was when I forgot to change the drive frequency from the default 50hz to 400hz that spindles need :)

UVW doesnt matter much, if its spins wrong way, swop any two.

Best to read the manual that came with your VFD. Also ask the seller what settings should be for the spindle. Oh and in 2 of the 3 times I saw wrong freq setting killing the VFD, the spindles were cooked too...

Dont have one at hand but i think Min Freq is 100? Max 400. But dont hold me to that, it could also differ between spindles, vfds and wattages.

is there anyway to test the spindle? i know you can test the ohms but that only clarifies the connections? but literally the spindle didnt even turn a full revolution before the vfd blew :( i dont really want to give up but i dont want to buy another vfd and have it go bang again id rather cut my losses now and source something else, oh yeah i bought my vfd from ebay and its kinda pointless trying to get information out of the sellers with regards to settings, the picture i attached has the manual

thanks for your info peter : )

Yeah measuring Ohms and checking for inconsistencies between the three pairs will reveal if theres a short or open. If they measure within say 5% of each other its fine

ya they all read 1.6 ohms so the spindle is good :)
