I think it's fantastic. The twin concepts of freedom of information and freedom of skill is one that's occupied my mind for many years. That is, "If I know how to make something and am technically capable of making it, why shouldn't I be able to make it for myself?" Apparently unlicensed, unserialed firearms/lower receivers are actually legal in the US as long as you make them for your own personal use and never sell them or pass them on. So I suppose that was more a question that occupied my mind when I was still living in England. I have a hard time with the concept of being unable to make something I'm capable of making for the sole reason that it's illegal to make. It's almost circular logic. with the result that sensible engineering types who would only shoot in the middle of nowhere or just keep it on the mantelpiece as a trophy build have no access to firearms, even for research purposes, but the criminals do- while supporting the illegal arms trade, to boot. Then again, the England shooting squad has to go to France to train for the Olympics, so there you go. Realistically, the "problem types"- gangs, petty criminals, drug dealers, white supremacist cults, etc- who actually might shoot someone without cause are highly unlikely to bother using this type of thing when the ability to buy black market firearms is so easy, and guns are treated virtually disposably; never maintained, never practiced with, and disposed of after a crime. Gun control is probably the main area those twin concepts frequently applies to, but I'm sure there are others. I certainly like the "how much control can the government truly have as we move into the future?" philosophical questions it's raising. Of course, that's not a problem here in the west, because the governments aren't going to have control in the future anyway. We're going to be governed by Google, Koch and Monsanto!
Since this is an open source project: I am betting that the jigs could be modified to fix on a OX an make your own. Bob
I don't think I'd like to trust an OX to mill aluminium that precisely. It would be interesting to see how the jigs are externally applicable though. Of course, I have to wait a couple years so I can take citizenship first. I don't currently have any Second Amendment rights, hahaha.
