    Sorry for the extreme delay on updates.

    Here is a link the the project which anyone can download, keep in mind that this is highly experimental and still work in progress, I plan on making several changes to this tonight and re-cut top plate tomorrow.

    !! The current project files represent in no way the final product as I intend to share it. !!

    Several changes to updated design.

    • Moving Z axis motor to the bottom.
    • More space without making the footprint considerably bigger, adding only a few cm to depth of the printer.
    • Room for additional 2-3 toolheads.

    Hi j0achim,

    Thanks on supplied files. It looks good.

    You have used 20x60 profiles? Do you find them strong enough. I am still in doubt to go with 30x60 altough 20x60 should be strong.
    You used 6mm bottom and top plates?

    I would only change orientation of Z axis alu profile as they did on e3d as it carries more weigth that way.

    I will probably change the orientation of the Z axis profile on future revisions, that said that would require some belt rearrangement, or maybe change the Z post for a 30x60 profile would do the trick. Rigidity of previous version was very stable so we'll see how it goes.

    Unfortunately I burned my end mill during last cut, I did manage to salvage the top plate, though the finish is by no means as I would like, however for a prototype it does not matter.

    I have wasted a lot of time trying to 3D print to some mock-up carriage objects on my old CR-10S however the hot-end thermistor is borked so could not get temps under control, so I'll be cutting some pieces out of lexan for the carriage and get it moving.

    If you change orientation of Z profile put one set of pulleys behind it as tensioners and to avoid the profile itself.

    I was looking at prices of rails, 9 and 12 have almost same price on Aliexpress?

    I will definitely add a post in the middle for belts in future revisions.

    If I recall correctly E3D went with 9mm rails because of weight and precision. I don't know the weight difference between 9 and 12, but **** the 20 is heavy, and as we know it is all about keeping both friction and weight to a bare minimum, I even consider removing most of the crossbeam to reduce weight on the gantry, the rail itself is very sturdy and made of a highly hard steel.

    12 rails for Y and 20 for Z should be ok as they are stationary.
    For X, 9 with aluminium support seems fine.
    Z must be strong and stable.

    Cut the sled out of aluminium, not perfectly assembled but will be replaced at a later time.

    Excellent, i see that i'm not the only one to want to build an E3D like.
    This is why i build my CNC.

    just for info what are the footprint you have for now ?

    and to answer the weight difference between mgnh 12 and 9 is for a 400mm long:
    case: 50g for the 12 vs 30 for the 9
    rail: 260g vs 152g

    though i plan to use 12 to have a better torsion rigidity.
    and when i see how the MGN cube performs with MGN12H and profile...

    i'm preparing an X gantry that looks more like the new aluminium one from E3D,
    i calculate the wieght difference with a 2020 profile, i'm 80% weight of the profile but i can fix it directly to the mgn rails and the mgn Y cases, so no print part to do that.
    profile 492mm: 227g (171cm3 per meter so 84.132cm3 at 2.7g/cm3)
    my profile: 180g (66.84 cm3)

    It might gain some weight because i have to remove a support bar at bottom to allow a passage for the belt.
