Lack of power to raise z

    Have a cnc machine built from scratch looks like a c-beam jr.
    Put it away for a while ( Frustation ) now I am back at it... Everything is going along pretty good after pulling it half apart and rebuilding..... arduino nano driving nema 23 motors using 12 volt powerfor test purposes
    all drives lubed and working in proper order ...
    PROBLEM: After attaching z axis it will lower router fine and smooth but has a hard time raising z axis
    will raise very nice if I give it a hand raising... would this be because not enough power? goes back and forth lying on a flat surface just fine ... bad motor? open ears to any ideas
    I do hear a chugging type of noise when it trys to go up but it needs just a little help to move

    Yep, need more power, what stepper drivers are you using? What size nema23 and what screw pitch?

    Screw pitch is 8mm
    believe the nema 23 are 179oz if that sounds right
    the drivers are a4988 on ardino uno shield board

    My REAL setup is a arduino nano with m335 stepper drivers 36 volt power
    Last fall I had it out in the garage fired it up and smelt wires or something burning...
    After trial and error found I somehow burned one of the drivers out (got one coming)
    I just been getting reaquainted with the machine and seeing what else I might use to get it going

    My REAL setup above, does it look like everything should run compatible?
    Had it doing some tests and it was working last fall, all I needed to do was tweak a few things... then it got cold
    thats when I smelt wires burning

    Which exact drivers do you have? Most m335’s I see are 24v max?
    A4988 are typically underwhelming, have you increased the current with the pot on the board?

    Perhaps add some cooling and increase current? Motor sound plenty powerful.

    From getting some advice from the forum, Motors are fine but trying to run nema 23 with a 12 volt power and arduino drivers are most likely the problem
    Moving up to 24 volts and m335 drivers using arduino mini nano to run things
    Taking it apart and doing it again

    Oops my bad... power supply is 24 volt running nema 23 motors coupled with arduino mini nano
    that should all run well together...right?
    next week or so new driver and wires should be here then try it all over again

    Yes with an arduino you can run any size stepper you want, as long as the driver can provide enough current! voltage = speed, current = torque
