    Hi,
nice idea, will be intresting to see if this works using beltdrive. I guess stretch will be your biggest problem ( worktable+ part+ cuttingforces). So belt on belt drive may be considered.
Why not use Ball-races as outer supports? Cheap and much less friciton than felt (which i doubt to work - but then who knows). Just ad a steel/aloi frame beneath your spoilboard to support the races.
Linear guides would be the way to go on this kind of machine, in my opinion, but thats not cheap anymore.

    greets

What you're trying to achieve can easily be done for $500 and without the need for future upgrades. It just won't be pretty. Two questions: What size router do you intend to mount and do you have access to a drill press?

Thank You guys for the ideas!

I am worried about the belts stretching. The belt system on this unit will be removed and used on another project when my current circumstance changes. Then this CNC will receive ACME screws on all four motors.

YES, Ball races are a great idea. Later I want to add a fourth motor and actuator, one for each side of the cutting surface. Funds are short atm and I don't want to wait to start building this. $500 is really over budget for me but I can make it work with some creative thinking.

The router I have is a standard plunge router made by Bosch 2.25HP. Yes, I have a large variable speed drill press.
