Received mine a bit ago..now have to wait until I have time to unbury the table I just built for it to get started, amongst grocery shopping, work, etc.

Mine is mechanically assembled. No wiring yet. Took about 6 hours following the video. Was very happy with how easy it all went together. Very easy build - just a little time consuming.

The machine is very sturdy. The cast brackets add a ton of rigidity to the gantry. Before those went on, there was a touch of flex, but you had to put a lot of your weight on it. Would have been plenty sturdy (for my needs) without the cast brackets, but those really beefed it up.

Adjusting the eccentrics is very easy as well. Getting a snug-but-not-too-snug wheel contact on the beams is easy.

Excited to get this machine up and running!

dmlingerfelt, how many boxes was your kit? I received 2, but can't find the wiring kit pieces except the slot covers.

@PatMcClintic 2 boxes. One long box that had all of the beams and the long lead screws. The other had all of the small parts plus the Z axis beam and screw.

They had a parts list in one of the boxes that had items checked off as they inventoried them for packaging. Admittedly, I haven't made it to the electronics yet so I hope mine are in there!

I just recently purchased the lead machine and I ordered the high torque stepper motors. Will the XPro V3 work properly with these?

    Thanks

I don't think my order is complete. I have only received one 37lb box and it's only 21" long not sized for the 1000mm C Beam.... Waiting on a reply from the parts store.

    :)

You definitely have another box coming. I initially received one tracking number for the same box you have, but there was another box that the Parts Store confirmed that arrived closely with the other one.

The Open Builds customer service is pretty awesome. My other pieces were packed and ready to be picked up by Priority Mail within hours of emailing them. I ordered some more pieces and they were picked and ready to ship in less than an hour. For anybody having an issue, don't forget to contact http://support.openbuilds.com/support/home with your Parts Store questions or concerns. They are very helpful.

I purchased the kit with the high torque motors, and can confirm they work with the XPro. I don't think you'll be able to drive them to their limit, but they should work fine. Personally I went with them in case I decided to switch controllers with more powerful drives / higher voltage. Just got the first moves out of the machine last night, so I haven't cut anything yet.

    Hello everybody,

I got it assembly finally after 4 days here and there,

testing movements, on the Y axis seems to stop/get stuck at the middle on the left side (viewing from front), right side seems fine but this causes the X axis to deviate (not perpendicular) to Y,
Any ideas how to troubleshoot this issue?

    Thanks.

Theres a few things you can try. you can try to add a little bit more current to that side's driver and see if it helps, in my case it was actually one of the delrin nuts binding up because they were rotating slightly when I tightened them up. Had to push it in the opposite direction and hold it there before tightening it up.

basically, jog it to the area where it binds up, loosen the delrin nuts, and see if it still binds up. if it doesn't, you have the same issue I had.

you are the man, basically the left lead screw has a little curve at the middle because it was tight it bonded there, just a little lose seems to fixed.

almost finish the board holes, dust shoe really needed if any have some plans to cut really appreciated.

yeah, it's actually the delrin nut that is out of alignment, I had the same problem on my x axis. just loosend and hold it in place when you tightened it. you actually don't want it loose because it will introduce some backlash. good to see you got it running!

Hey guys just wanted to share that Matt just finished up and posted a new router install video on the Build page that really helps to make a nice clean installation and wire run of the Dewalt 611 router mounted to the LEAD CNC machine.
    More to come... :)

I have my kit in hand and have begun assembly.

Any particular reason not to build the Y carriage assemblies with the eccentrics on the top? It would facilitate easier adjustment at a later date after securing the machine to the top of the work surface.

    Thanks!

This is just me speculating, but if you put the eccentrics on top, you are more likely to misalign/tilt the x gantry than if they were at the bottom.

You want the eccentrics on the wheels carrying the least amount of load. The top wheels in this case are carrying the entire weight of the gantry and spindle whereas the bottom wheels merely keep the top wheels from lifting up due to uplift from the cutting forces. By putting the eccentrics on the lesser loaded wheels you decrease the chances of system forces in combination with system vibration readjusting the eccentrics. (Likewise, you would use the eccentric spacers on the top when the carriage wheels are set inside the C-beam as the bottom wheels are where the greater load is being carried.)

Any chance we are going to see videos of this being put through its paces to show its cutting capability?

    Thanks for the share,

Do you have any video that shows wiring of the IOT relay ?

Anyone have any thoughts on dust collection for this machine? I am about 2/3 finished with the build...hopefully will have it running by Sunday or Monday morning...

Working up a Hello World first cut video now and also wanted to make a bit more in depth 'how to' video tutorial on how you can go from an idea to a cut, so thats also in the works. On this tutorial style video initially I thought I would just make a quick project video, but then I realized this is a good opportunity to explain while I am making the project to, hopefully, help others learn how to use the software and machines.
We feel these two videos will really help everyone feel comfortable around the way the machines work and from there the plan is to go into project/tutorial mode cranking out as many cool projects as we can :)

We love this little triggerable relay. Yes this is on the list for a product video coming soon. :)

Kentcnc makes a really nice dust boot that you may want to have a look at as well

Does anyone make a linear z axis like the cnc4newbies style? I have one on my xcarve and that thing is sold and rigid!

Haven’t even finished building the lead yet and I’m already looking to upgrade lol

I was under the impression that the C-beam actuator (which seems to be more or less what the Lead uses) was basically the Openbuilds approach to the same part - but I have no idea how the two compare, or the relative virtues of the linear bearings vs v-wheels.

What makes you ask? Are you noticing a lack of rigidity on your Lead so far, or just liked the way it worked on the XCarve?

Don't feel bad - I'm pondering upgrades and mine hasn't even shipped yet (actually, I've been pondering upgrades since before I even decided to order the Lead).

    Two more days... *sigh*

I would've changed colors if I realized just how long this week was going to be. You'd think there'd be warnings about that on calendars.

Not that I really need more to distract me from holiday prep.

I just see the Z being the possible weak link on this machine. I have a CNC4Newbies Z axis with linear bearings and a fast lead screw...its very strong and rigid and I really like it.
