Any ideas on where I can find local people who are knowledgeable about this stuff? I'd love to meet them, watch them work and learn. I tried googling, but apparently didn't hit on the correct search terms, or else there is no one around here (richmond, VA). Thanks for letting me know how you connected with people. The online forums, etc. are good up to a point, but I'd like to meet and learn from people actually doing these types of projects. Thanks

Welcome, RichB1. Glad you decided to join us at Openbuilds. :D
I'm sure you won't find a friendlier bunch of people than those here at the Openbuilds Forum. However, I think the best way forward is to get to know some of them, by way of participating in the discussions, whether that be just asking questions related to CNC or similar, or even what you plan to build and do with your future CNC. There are loads of Videos on the CNC subject on You Tube, and it is definitely a case of read, read and read a bit more, to really get to know the possibilties and fun a CNC can give you.
Yes I'm sure, if someone lived in your area, once they get to know of you, would be willing to help you directly with any help you need.
It would probably help if you put some approximate details of your Location in your Personal Profile as well.
Give it a little time and I'm sure you'll find all the help you could want. :D
    Cheers
    Gray

easy enough to go from lat, long to kml that will load in Google Earth (or overlay an embedded map).
bit harder to get lat, long from locations like 'Grahamstown, South Africa' but maybe there is an API for that....
    something like
unbolt it : Address List to Longitude Latitude Geocoder
but that is is too manual, need something that runs on the web server automatically. might have to sign up for the Google Earth API...

or maybe one of these answers
    https://www.quora.com/How-do-I-do-b...-latitude-and-longitude-data-for-each-address

the 'geoip' package (linux, freebsd etc) will get lat, long from IP addresses but that is not totally accurate especially for people using mobile connections since the IP might be registered to the providers head office location...

Makerspaces Meetups in Richmond - Meetup

This would likely be contrary to OpenBuilds Privacy Policy.

Feel free to create a post with subject "Anyone here from VA"? Perhaps you can find an offline friend. In the meantime, OpenBuilds is the best virtual hacker space you'll find. The gentlemen already posting here, along with the rest of the community love to share their experience. All the best to you on your journey!

quite, but a pin on a map does not need to have a name connected to it, it is just a
'yes there is someone else in your town with the same CNC disease' (-:

and, the pin on the map is not the home address, just the city

To be honest, our pins pretty much cover the entire map ;)
