Awesome job so far! Congrats on the controller panel, lots of people get hung up on that.

You did a great job photographing your platform, I wonder if you might have some detail photos of your controller panel build? I've not seen too many folks publish a build with that particular board and 542 driver combo. Adding a photo series of it might be a real benefit to somebody.

I just ordered this 80mm mount 80mm spindle motor mount bracket Clamp CNC Engraving Mill Grind Router 3D Print | eBay

It's great looking and appears more than strong enough.

I have adapted the mount which came with the spindle to temporarily get the spindle attached until I make a better mount. Pictures coming this weekend. I was going to try and enlarge the hole on the open builds mount to 80mm the way beardyblair did it Sphinx XL but I don't have a lathe so trying to using the build to make itself.

I will take pictures of the control board soon. Now that I have a platform to set the CNC on I can get back to the electronics side. I did realize a shortage of smoothie board use so will try and document.

I'm currently designing a similar machine. What's the max cutting area of yours?

With the way the X gantry is situated with the vertical c-beam on the inside of the Y axis c-beam it is 365 mm x 740 mm (25.5 in x 29 in) of cutting area. You can gain about 75 mm in width (3 in) if you move one of the verticals to outside the y axis.

Sounds good. I was thinking I'd put one of the verticals on the outside like some of the other guys have done so I can squeeze every inch out of this machine. Thanks for the info.

Just got my machine running yesterday, and I noticed as I was drilling holes in my waste board that I'm getting deflection on plunges. If I grab the Z motor or the router collet, I can wiggle the Z axis a little too much for my taste. Have you had this issue? Found any solution? I'm trying to decide if it would be worth the time to rework the Z, turn the C Beam around, bolt it to the X gantry plate so that the beam itself is fixed, and allow just the spindle to move up and down. Any thoughts?

Jon, I have not done a lot of cutting yet so have not noticed it while in operation but I did just go grab the spindle and I can torque it back and forth a little. It does not seem to be loose but more the wheels are giving under the load. I can also see some twisting of the X gantry as the weight of the spindle causes a bend of the c-beam which I have noticed during squaring checks. I think this might be normal deflection of the c-beam. I was going to try to run some cuts and see how bad it is or if I will actually notice it and if it is a problem I will look at making new gantry plates and maybe have to come up with a stiffer X gantry. As for mounting the Z to the plate and allowing only the spindle to more, I don't see how that would change much as all the wheels are still in play and the twisting of the X is still present, but it would not hurt to try either. Let me know if you try it and the results you get.

Cool. Looking at mine more closely, it's definitely the wheels moving. I need to do some actual cuts and see how it performs. After discussing things in another post, it doesn't sound like reworking the Z will make much difference as it's still the same components with the same wheels deflecting.
