ooznest OX CNC Machine

    Hi. Is the ooznest ox OK to use for PCB engraving?

    Solid Carbide you can't go wrong with really. Is it a V cutter you are after?

    Yes, should be able to, the important thing is to make sure it is well calibrated and tram.

    Hi Ryan, thanks for that. What sort of bits are good for engraving wood/acrylic?

    Will look into the other programmes you mentioned too.

    Hi Ryan, What tollerances can I expect to get on a 1500x1500 machine? Mainly for work in wood and plastic.

    0.2-0.25mm would be easily achievable on this machine.

    Thanks for the reply. But if the motor has 5% error on each step would that not sum up to more than 0.2?

    I am curious where you got the 5% error from. Or did I miss it in the discussion?

    The motors on the kit are NEMA23 1.8° +-5%. But the error is non accumulative on stepper motors. A full 1.8° step on these motors with GT3 Belts is 0.3mm of travel, so at 5% the error is +-0.015mm.

    Eventually found the cause...... It was the belt tension on the LH Y Axis.
    All seemed tight and good.
    The test was to force the RH Y axis and see how much it took to move. Do the same on the LH Side and it was easy and the belt was jumping out of the toothed wheel. All had looked fine.

    Would be good to have a strain gauge setting to tension the belts

    On the Vacuum tables.....

    I have created 3 Plenum Zones on the 1500x1500 bed, 2 off 500x1400mm, 1 off 300x1400. Each made of 3 5mm ply boards. Holes 2mm dia 10mm grid drilled in top sheet. The center piece is only around the edge and some spacers inbetween creating a honeycomb. Two inlets on each plenum Connected to one vacuum motor mounted under the machine. Plenum edges sealed with Gaffer tape. Spoilboard is 12mm Lite mdf in three pieces to suit the plenum, edges sealed with concrete drive sealer and gaffer tape, faced to remove top surface and level.


    Hold is great. using 300x300mm 9mm thick mdf on the top of the spoilboard, you cannot move the part. Have cut up to 75% of the surface of the 9mm board through and there is a large reduction in side to side holding, but it still holds small cut parts in place (using a 3mm up,down compression cutter). After using two corner supports screwed into the spoilboard the results are excellent.

    Lamb Amtek vacuum pumps were about £100 each - if you find better let me know

    Really need to know what you are cutting - wood (hard/soft), man made (mdf), plastic, metal.
    Also are you engraving, Carving or cutting through?

    I have experience with MDF not Acrylic

    For engraving MDF I use a 60 deg Vbit. Works great with the Vetric Software.
    If you are cutting a groove (not Through) use a Downcut spiral - This forces the swarf into the gap and gives a good top edge finish - Run at about 22000rpm and 3600mm/min. Any lower feed and you risk a fire!!!!

    For cutting through use a Up down Compression cutter. This gives a good edge on top and bottom. I use a 3mm Cutter for this, max depth 3mm per pass, same feeds and speeds as above.

    Get the 3mm Up Down spirals and 60 deg Cutter on ebay. Order the 3mm ones now as they come from China and take 3 weeks - come in packs of 5 or 6. Dead cheap (less than £20)

    Can you give me some information how you control the start and stop of the Kress Spindle.

    I am planning to bulit an 1500 X 1000 OX cnc machine but I prefer the Kress 1050 FME-1 spindle instead of Dewalt

    I have a Chinese spindle 2.2KW running off a VFD Inverter. Speeds and on off controlled in Mach 3 through a suitable BOB
    Spindle uses ER20 Collet allowing up to 13mm

    I would like to use the Kress 1050 FME-1 spinlde, Can I use the ports from the CNC xPRO driver, Just for ON OFF of the spindle. It is manual adjustable, 6 speeds.

    Hi Guys,

    Well I finished the build of my CNC and just started the machine test and getting absolutely nothing??!!

    I have swung through the system and got 24v at the board, fans are running and 24v showing in the power unit.

    The firmware is set at 115200 and GRBL, says connected and all values were altered prior to connecting power.

    I put the meter on each motor and gave commands but seems nothing is going to the motors. I have also changed the pots to max and min but still nothing.

    The belts are aligned and tight so not really sure what to look for now so thought I'd better see if you guys have any ideas??

    False alarm just found a loose sheet with a manual change on value 4. All good!!!

    Yes you can control a spindle with the xPro see here: CNC xPRO Driver

    I think you will need a relay as already mentioned.
