I would use it on my 1000mmx1500mm ox/c-beam hybrid router / Laser / Microscope. I have a tinyg v8 running the show now, but it doesn't have acceleration compensation for the PWM output for the laser, so raster imaging is a no go. I've looked at the source code to add it in and I don't really want to touch it. It seams like I would spend too much time on that.

What I really want to spend my time on, and what I would use the smoothieboard for is developing a gigapixel image stitching workspace in chilipeppr (and maybe cncjs) for the microscope.

That actually sounds quite doable, the laser won't be fast with that much weight to move around, but with that small of a footprint you could use a dremel snake tool so only the head is moving around and not the motor. 2W-2.5W 445nm laser modules are small enough 40mmx40mm, or for more investment a mirror head would be even smaller and lighter, and a bowden tube extruder would work in those dimensions and save on moving weight even more. A core xy setup could be pretty fast and small enough to enclose in od4 laser safety acrylic which would double as a heated enclosure for printing with a possibility for fume extraction. I'd suggest leaving the heated bed as a removable piece so it doesn't get damaged, or worse reflect the laser out of the machine.

While I've had a lot of fun with my OB Plate Maker, I am thinking of building something stiffer to be able to efficiently and accurately machine aluminum with deeper cuts, and possibly a little mild steel. I'd use the smoothieboard as the brains for the new build, so I can keep my plate maker. One thing I'd really like is a 4th axis...

I would use a Smoothieboard on my Openbuilds sourced 3D printer. I am converting it to a CoreXY machine, and a Smoothieboard with Smoothieware would be a great addition to implement with my build.

CNC Gantry Table.jpg Been doing some preliminary layouts and I am just finalizing a new design.

How about a Gantry Style CNC 1500 x 3000 mm
Frame pieces are 3" Sch 40 PVC filled with concrete and reinforced with 3 pieces of 1/4" all thread
NEMA 23 motors w/Double motor config on Y axis
I am also experimenting with rack and belt concept where I use an epoxy resin to cast the belt profile to address belt stretch issues.

I'd like to start with as "grass roots" a build as possible (or possibly two or three versions) -- a printer that can be built from common or salvaged material... for example square towel bars for frame pieces, plywood/OSB/MDF, inexpensive or salvaged steppers, homemade axis-stop switches, etc.

Then, using the very basic, homemade printer, walk people through the process of upgrading it by printing new/additional/better parts.

The gist of the project is to show that with the right board (a Smoothieboard) anyone can get into 3D printing.

I would really apreciatte your help to "SMOOTHIEFY" my 3D Printer Project, as follows, I´m waiting for the heat bed and extruder to arrive and then finish the mechanical assembly. After that I'll get an electronics, wire it up, and let the machine "Rock and Roll". Would be great to be Smoothieboard Powered!
    Thanks.
