After an almost 2 year hiatus, on the forum due to illness, I have finally started a new build to replace my OX.

Let me please apologize to anyone who tried to contact me.

The plates are laser cut from 1/4" mild steel, I also did holes for mounting nema 23 or 34 steppers.

The Y axis plates are 1/4" aluminium.

    Welcome back!
i have always thought that this is one of the best designs so far... apart for one minor point:
There is really no need for two/four linear rails on y. Overkill.
Those rails and their wagons take so much load there is simply no need for doubles. (there will still two of them being left anyway and very little lever on z.)
makes setting up more easy too. Even on quite big industrial cnc a pair of 20 siced rails on y can be seen regulary.
You will be happy using only two per axis - your wallet too. Upgrade later if you must...
    Looking forward to your updates.

    greets

    flo

Great to have you back on the scene again. Wow, is it that long?
Hope things are good for you now.
That machine is going to weigh a ton. I wonder if that isn't a bad thing?
Can't wait to see what else you get up to this time.
    All the best :)

    Thank you Flo & Gray.

Flo I had already bought the linear bearings, so decided to install them "just because" I have them and may remove lower sets after testing. Thank you for your valued input!

Having started the assembly today, I have to agree 100% these trucks are super strong with no play and slide ever so smooth.... I must admit aligning the rails with a dial indicator was tricky but fun just because it was nice being in the workshop!

Sadly yes, it's been over a year now off work, now just trying to move forward with life a little bit each day....

I agree 100%, I might be given the "heaviest CNC machine award". After the OX, I decided I really wanted a machine which is super robust....

    Best wishes
    Steve

The main frame is now assembled

next I will be adding the linear rail plates. It's heavy and very rigid...

Anxious to see more!! I recently moved so my OX is disassembled, I'm pretty sure it will resemble your build when put back together.;)
    Keep up the great work!

Excellent design. May do something similar for my next machine.

Not overkill at all if you are going to cut aluminum on a regular basis.

    Hi Steve,

I like your designs, and how they evolve from one to another. Which poses a question. :) You've once expressed interest in a single motor, belt interconnected, two-ballscrew drive for the gantry. What ever happened to that?

Looking forward to seeing your build progressing.

    Hi Steve,
This is still one of the best designs on OB I’ve seen for best practices in rigidity and accuracy, congrats!

I would love to see an update with photos / video of it chewing on some aluminum, any mods and anything you would do different?

I’m looking at doing my own machine in a similar fashion (but smaller, approx 800x600mm), want to do aluminum, and want to borrow some of your ideas.

    Best Regards!
