By the way, those triple-hole brackets should be behind the gantry, or you can leave it like it is now and have 20mm longer cutting area but less stable gantry.

Yes I didn't think about stability but wanted longer cutting area. I will use that for light cuts until I build a stronger one:)

Why putting the bracket back makes is more stable?

Now less force is needed to create a parallelogram out of the gantry, looking from the top onto it and seeing the back brace and X axis V-Slot as the parallel part... If that made sense...

For example, if the back brace would be further away from the gantry, the whole gantry would be more stable as well.

Do we need to cut the 250mm threaded rod shorter?

    Hello @speed,

Yes you need to unless you use a 250mm 20x40 V-Slot.

I'm working on a new "Routy" that should be at the same price level as the Routy 290, let me show you a render:

It's still not released and there will not be a manual to build it, but I might make a build video (1 day work vs. a month for a manual).

I like it. What size is the cutting area?

It's 290x290x118mm when you use 500mm stock V-Slot. Parts without the wood, PSU and CNC controller board is just under 450USD; Z axis motor included, NEMA23, other motors are NEMA17 with 14t pulleys.

Just looking at what the market wants, so, larger cutting area... And for 471.90USD (Black V-Slot included, this added 4USD to the cost ;) ) it won't break the bank, again. Cutting area: 810x290x100mm.

    Promoveo_2016_0_6_505.jpg
On Monday I get some samples of drag chains; one of 1.2m can be mounted to the back of the machine for cable management and on the sides a cable of 350mm will power the X axis motors (no drag chain needed there). From here we go a step up to 720x720x100mm and last 1220x1200x100mm (C-Beam all over, double plates and table/bench design included (plywood/V-Slot/C-Beam) :D.

Anyway, the previous Routy was about the price of this machine, sure the wood will add some to the price but still, anything under 500USD we consider a good starter project. Remember that all these builds can be easily upgraded/expanded over time, when needed, without paying for a full machine again.

Here is Homing Cycle for Routy. Used 6 limit switches. Works really good. Wiring took me 2 days :)

This is a great build and I am looking forward to making this for my middle school makerspace. Do you have the write up for the Arduino and electronics? I am new to this and need some guidance.
    thanks.

    Hello @carrcrew,

I never made the write up but the motors come with 2.54mm (dupont) connectors so it hooks up easily to a GRBL shield. Use DRV8825 drivers or better, a fan to cool them, and a 24vDC PSU (250W and if possible NOT for a LED strip, the ones sold by OpenBuilds are good (what a surprise, I brought them in :D) ). In the software section of this forum you can find more information on GRBL. When you come to the point finishing the electronics and you need help then just ask; first worry about the mechanical part ;).

I would also recommend you buy really good quality end mills. Other wise dremel will suffer, mine already burnt because of 90 mins of non stop cycle time and cheap ebay cutters. After build you will want to make some modifications, if you can afford buy extra from all hardwares, and 5-6 limit switches. They will make your life easy. If you send me a photo of your grbl board I can help you. Also check these links:

    Hi everybody,

I'm a REAL newbie to the fascinating CNC world, I've done a lot of research and reading in the past 48 hours and came to the conclusion that openbuilds is the most useful resource I came across.

So here I am ready to jump in, I think the routy 290 would fit my needs (for now) the price point is right up my alley. I don't own a Dremel and I thought that instead of buying one maybe I'don't invest in good spindle (dewalt661) and re-use it on my next build (I'm sure I'll get addicted). I know that the build calls for a max 400w, but is it doable with some sort of modification?

I don't have the skills to cut straight the v-slots using a saw, so is there a way to change dimensions for minimum or no cuts?

I'm also considering an OX build (500mm x 500mm x 250mm) I input those numbers in the BoM and it seems that it wouldn't require any cuts, am I right? Only downside is that the OX is over budget and it will take me couple more months to get it done (need to save up a bit)

Last options, are @Ronald van Arkel posts #100 & #101, can dewalt661 be used on those. Is BoM going to be available. Do they require cutting the v-slots.

Sorry for the long post and thank you again for all you're doing.

After doing some numbers, it seems the OX (500x500x230) is only $120. I think I might go for it.

    Hello Alberto,

Thank you for the complement. There would be one change in the design to make it better; place a bearing between flex-coupling and the Acme rod plate instead of the M8 shim.

I don't have the the settings for the Arduino Uno but it's the same as the original Routy when using 20t pulleys, but if you use 14t pulleys you need to recalculate the steps of the motor. Use the RepRap Calculator - Prusa Printers to get the right value (GT2 2GT 2mm belt and if they are OpenBuilds motors then use 200 steps for 360º (full) rotation). It's recommended to use 1/4 or 1/8 divider on your stepper drivers.

I hope this gets you started.

    Hi all
i am planning to build this router, it would be my first machine and i plan to use it to produce PCB's and small stuff, like toys for my son :)

reason for choosing this machine is that it is relatively cheap, simple, and i have already 40 nema 17 motors lying around and a grbl controller.

    i have couple questions.

    - in the parts list, linear rails, the last rail listed it says 20x40x442, is it really a 20x40 or it is a 20x20 and thats a typo?
    - what would you recommend as spindle that i could reuse in a larger machine, possibly to also cut alu? are the chinese 400w spindles available on ebay any good?

    Hello @gianmarko,

The gantry uses a 20x60x442 and a 20x20x442 V-Slot, the 20x20 reinforces the gantry at the back. This router should be able to route PCB and normal wood without a problem.

I would recommend a DeWalt DW611 or 660 router. The 660 router can be clamped the same way as the Dremel rotary tool but you can buy a base for it as well: DeWalt DW660 Spindle Mount . The downside of the DW660 is that is does not have a speed regulator, so it will always work at 30k RPM; there are cheap regulators on eBay: Universal Variable Voltage Router Fan Speed Control Controller 120V AC 15 Amps … . But you might just skip the DW660 and go directly for the DW611 ;).

I hope that this helps. Remember that you need to cut your V-Slot straight so be prepared for that.

Is routy strong enough to carry dewalt dw611? I have been suffering with Dremel. Can't use tool bigger than 1/8. Did you mean dwp611?

You don't need a tool bigger than 1/8", and don't plunge so much, 0.5-1mm at a time.

The DW660 comes normally with a 1/8" and 1/4" collet, the DW611 comes only with a 1/4" collet. I forgot to add this to the post above.

Take a look at this video, useful when using a light CNC router:

Yes I actually use 1/8 tools but I want to use some face mills with 1/4 shank. And with 1/4 shank there are more variety tools. Hard to find quality tools with 1/8 shank. Like chamferring, facing tools. By the way the 1.25HP dwp611 router is 5.5 pounds heavy the dremel is 2 pounds is that ok for routy?

The DW611 is a bit heavy on the V-Slot 20x60, but the DW660 should not be a problem. I never tried the DW611 on the Routy so it's hard to say.

I would add more wheels and use a C-Beam to replace the 20x60. I'll draw the modifications/upgrade for you; gantry plates will be the same, but you need longer screws, some spacers and more wheels, besides the C-beam that is.

i am not familiar with these dewalt routers, do the 660 and 611 use similar clamps for mounting? is the 660 weight compatible with this router

"The gantry uses a 20x60x442 and a 20x20x442 V-Slot, the 20x20 reinforces the gantry at the back."

so the two vslots are same lenght? in the parts list they are quoted 443 and 442

i am aware of the fact that the vslots need to be cut square, i will see if i can cut them precise enough with my mitre saw, else ill get them cut by a professional workshop.
