Looking good! I especially love the z-axis speed! My MakerFarm iv3 has a painfully slow lift speed. It leads to blobbing at the corners of my prints. Perhaps I should try and adjust it,

I do notice that it still pauses, running at 150mm/sec the rumba has trouble keeping up

Rumba is just a beefier Ramps and I know that on Delta printers they have to use an ARM based controller like a Smoothie board to keep up. Sounds like that is what is needed for this too.

I believe they do as the designer, I think, was mentioning something about it on the RepRap forums but most people in the RepRap community have left that software now.

Yeah, Smoothie 5 is always out of stock and honestly it has been a long time since I saw it in stock.

Question time...Craftbot Plus is now a Core XY based machine and has a color LCD touch screen with a heated build plate that is 25x20x20 cm in build volume for $1099. How much is this printer for all of the parts?

Don't suggest a MKS SBASE as those have a lot of issues still.

finally figured out the problem with my Rumba and Marlin, I had the Serial port set to 3, thinking it was the same thing as the com port setting on my pc, once i set it back to 0, it connected fine

A logical conclusion as serial port used to mean COMmunications port.

hi, nice bot i must say. i am intending on building a 600 x 600 x 600 build volume bot and liked your approach of a fixed bed. Do you have any pics of printed parts ? How good are they compared to a standard cartasian printer. I recently finished a corexy with a contilevered bed , but the prints are not as good as my delta. so I want to see how good prints do others get.

    thanks.

    Adam,

Have you found a solution for your belt problem yet? Not sure if you saw, I left some suggestions in the Makerfarm forum.

I placed an order for some longer looped belt.. i feel this is the best option. but so far two belts with 2 steppers is working well.

Here is a video of it actually printing for the first time.
it ran into a heating issue.. as the fan was cooling the hotend too much and it couldnt hold its temp
and went into a thermal shutdown. I like how the BLtouch sensor flashes when someone goes wrong

Finally received a longer loop belt to drive all 4 Z screws. Upgraded to a single Nema 23 Stepper for the Z for the torque
I will also be adding in Ustepper.com upgrades for the X,Y&Z to turn the steppers into Servos.

    Adam,
I like this design a lot. Early in the build, you were looking to use a Smoothie Board controller, presumably for the faster CPU. What is it currently running?
    Thanks for any info,
    Gary

    Hey Adam,

About a week ago I started a search for a fixed-bed printer. When I couldn't find one, I started designing one in my head. I finally started my SolidWorks model tonight, and then found this forum after poking around on the openbuilds site. We are designing the same printer! You definitely have a head start, though! I also started with C-beams, but then moved away from them for several reasons. I think I'm going to go with a triple bowden to a diamond hotend. I think you are right on the mark with the NEMA 23 4-screw Z-axis - that's exactly what I was thinking, too. This must be convergent evolution! Anyway, just wondering if you had any updates and/or tips, and if you are planning on sharing your CAD. I hope it's going well!

    Hi Adam,
Well, I've gathered 90% of the pieces and parts to start building this printer. I've been printing the parts with the .stl's from ThingiVerse and doing some initial fitting of the extrusions together. Of course I've had to "undo" them a couple of times or so to insert T-nuts for components yet to come, but those kinds of things are par for the course. So I'm making progress.
One thing: there are 4 z-screw supports along the top frame that you didn't supply an .stl for - is there any chance of getting you to add that to the files in ThingiVerse? I could draw them up, as an "exercise for the student", but if you still have them handy . . .
    Thanks
    Gary
