Ah yes.. Thanks for the mention, didn't quite notice it. Did you have a Bukito? Let us know if you need any of the design files for the lastest version we make to help you on this one. We use Solidworks for most things.

    Hello,
Just came across this build and wanted to say it looks great! I wouldn't hesitate for a second to build this if I wasn't already involved in a MendelMax 1.5 build that I just started. Great graphics, the whole nine yards. Congratulations are in order!

Hello there, preparing to place ones order for bits and pieces in the next few days. when one says "Hotend carriages are inbound" do you mean to purchase from yourself?

I only ask as i have seen that you offer a complete laser and printed parts "package" and was looking at getting one of these to start me off.

i think i may go down the custom control board as i have a spare NXP micro laying about. could be interesting hehe.

    Thank you in advance.

    Regards,

    D JvR

Pat thank you for the kind words, though I'm afraid already building one isn't an excuse! LOL

I'm sure you can come up with some reason for needing a small/transportable printer as well! ;)

I can provide any parts you need towards your build. If you place an order for a set on eMaker then just attach a note to your PayPal Payment reminding me you require the new RepRapPro Hotend X-Carriage :) I aim to also get these files upload shortly.

Different electronics is no problem at all! You will just need to carefully drill a few fixing holes in the base to attach!

    Indieflow,
You are welcome. You are right, that is no reason to not build another one but all of my (I want to say spare cash but does anyone really have spare cash?) money is tied up in this build I am doing. The price for printing was a bit stiff but it was a complete roll of filament to make all of the parts and he is throwing in some helping hand stuff that he doesn't have too which is part of what makes this build possible. But not to worry, this is my next build, I assure you, it's just got to much cool factor to not build it.

Do you think it would be possible to adapt this design to use nema 17 motors? I have a set of them I want to re-purpose, but I guess new laser cut parts would have to be designed. Would there be other issues using them for this design?

I won't need the mini-extruder since I will be using this for paste printing.

Hi Marcel, unfortunately Nema 17's can't be used with this design as I based every aspect of the printer around the much smaller Nema 14's! It might not seem it but a lot of components, for example the Extruder, Laser cut plates and movement clearance on each Axis would require a complete remodel.

I have had quite a few requests on this subject and have taken the whole Nema 14/17 choice in to account when working on my next iteration of this design! My next design is based around aluminium plates rather than laser cut which will also allow for a 200x200 or larger version :)

Pat it would be great for you to build both printers and let me know what you think between the 2! I currently have a Prusa i3 Ali plate and a IndieLC and can't remember the last time I turned on my i3!

Hello, is it possible to have a complete BOM that list everything that i need to complete the printer?

Ok, I just went to look at Nema 14 motors and I think I will just pick up a few. I only need 3 since I am not using the extruder or hot end as I will be using this printer to print paste. Would the part below be the right motor (should I get 0.8A or 1.25A)?

I would go for the 0.8A, 4.6V, 15N.cm holding torque version as a minimum of 13.7N.cm is recommended by the RepRap community. Nema 14's are much nicer size and weight wise compared to Nema 17's, though they do run near their upper limit! Just remember to setup your stepper current correctly on your drivers otherwise they will run hot!

Thanks! Yes I was thinking of the motor current, I need to remember to trim the pots down to start. I am re-purposing a printrboard which I think will work fine with those motors. I was wondering about the depth of the motor, the one on robotdigg is Motor depth: 34mm, is that the correct depth (from their positioning I don't think it matters, but not sure). Also wondering why you chose a hall-o endstop for the z axis?

    Thanks for answering!!

Totally correct those depths (lengths) will be fine! Only the X-axis Stepper would be a problem if longer than 36mm.

You can use a standard micro switch for the Z-axis, I just like the Hall-O endstops for the ease of adjustment in height (simple pot tweak).

Also not a problem at all, best way for others to learn also!

    Good morning all,

Bits have started to arrive, however Im not to sure on the M5 threaded rod. what have others used (thread wise and the likes or even where they got them from Z-Axis schematic part 12)??

Also where on earth can you get the rubber coupling (Z-Axis schematic part 14)?

Apart from that still undecided on the controller.

O Im so excited, like a kid in a toy store.

Thank you in advance for all the help.

    Mr Me

    Edit:

its not that i have not been looking for the M5 threaded rod, have this in mind at present:

I kind of have a spreadsheet put together (to help me with costing) if interested, its a little confusing but may help if interested.

Basically I went through all the eng drawings and took the BOM from them.

    Mr Me

    Edit:
Sheet 1 has the summarised parts.
Sheet 2 was my working sheet.
sheet three (Fulliy.......) Bom from eng drawings.

(Check though as i may have missed things hehe)

    Mr Me

I know just how you feel, I feel the same every time I start a new build :D

This build was designed around a simple/cheap threaded rod Z-Axis (something like this - eBay) which I use and have never had problems! I am looking at moving over to the OpenBuilds Lead Screw for my next build.

As for the rubber coupling you just use a short length of rubber hose (say 4mm inner diameter) heated in a cup of boiling water to soften, then push on to the Stepper shaft and thread in the M5 rod. Secure with a cable tie each side, voila! Cheap, cheerful and secure, allowing a slight amount of flex. I think I bought mine from B&Q, though you should be able to cut a short length from any good DIY store or garden centre!

Controller wise I can highly recommend the Minitronics for a single Extruder Setup, though I'm playing with a Smoothie Board for the Dual Extruder Mod.

    Thanks
    Simon

    Good afternoon,

Thank you for the fast reply, hmm in interesting idea the hose pipe will have to have a look into that. The lead screw, will have a look at the link and again thank you.

With regards to the smoothie board, funny you should mention that, I have one that I'm intending to put into my CNC router. may toy with the idea of using this as a stand in.

The Minitronics definitely looks interesting but cant find any in the UK. I was looking at using an NXP dev board I have spare, but this looks easier hehe.

    Again, thank you.

    regards,

    Mr Me (Darv)

Just started ordering parts. In looking at the diagram I can't quite tell how the belts are attached, or are they loops? If they are loops how long are they?

Regarding the threaded rod I am also thinking about using the ACME from OpenBuilds, how long should this be? I could use a 5mm to 8mm coupler to connect to the motor.

I am not quite clear on how the X is riding up on the lead screw. Since I am not using the extruder I will need to re-design that and it looks like the lead screw goes through that part.

    Thanks for your help!!

Marcel the belts as you correctly mentioned are looped on this build and secured with a cable tie! Each belt is approximately 600mm in length, though make sure you have extra as it is easier to feed through and secure prior to cutting. The belts are then tensioned by extending the idler pulleys prior to tightening the low profile screws on the laser cut plates.

Unfortunately there isn't enough clearance on the Z-Axis stepper motor to use a flexible coupler due to the securing bracket! Additionally if you decide to attempt the use of an ACME Lead screw you will need to pack out the Acme Nut to align it with the centre of the stepper motor! I'm currently toying with a new securing bracket for the Z-Axis stepper to allow adjustment for ACME Lead screws and flexible couplers!

The current design moves the X-Axis by jamming a M5 nut between the Extruder and the Extruder Spacer (Geared Extruder Items 1 & 7). The nut can be seen in the Geared Extruder diagram - below Item 13. Hope this helps ;)

Thanks Indieflow. I think I have come to an important conclusion which is that I should build it the way you designed it first and then go from there to alter the design. Otherwise I am just going in circles thinking in darkness. I am off to order the rest of my parts...

Thats the great thing about a RepRap design printer, you can tinker and alter the design to fit your needs! Please keep me updated on thoughts/problems/tweaks etc you find whilst making your build as feedback is very helpful for future development of this design.

PLEASE note the bearings in this are wrong, they are 625 and should be 623's

And get the recommended motors lol :p

    My bad!.

    Good afternoon all.

Just a quick update, the NEMA 14 motors from RepRapPro would appear to be a little larger compared to the recommended ones in the link provided on the parts page. I saw the Nema 14 in the parts section (of this build), then saw NEMA 14 motors available on RepRapPro and assumed (silly of me) that these would be the same.

    Motor on RepRapPro
    https://reprappro.com/shop/components/nema-14-stepper-motor-standard-loom/
Mind you no fault at all on RepRapPro's behalf. wonderful service!!!!

    Motor on Zapp Automation:
    http://www.zappautomation.co.uk/ele...-1004a-high-torque-hybrid-stepper-motors.html

The recommended motor has a mounting hole spacing of 26mm where as the one from RepRapPro has a mounting hole spacing of 31mm (if memory serves me right).

I did toy with the idea of drilling new holes but I would needed to have made some extra bracing do just ordered the right ones.

On a side note, Zapp Automation have fulfilled my order and can t really complain, arrived in a timely fashion if any one is worried about that.

And if you are looking to buy the printed and laser cut parts. I would definitely recommend getting them from Indieflow. The quality is good, and best of all he is honest and upfront. Wonderful to deal with.

    Regards,

    Mr Me (Darv)
