That looks awesome! I can't see what type of screw you are using, is it a lead screw or ball screw?

I am reusing the lead screw that I have. The existing lead screw z-axis worked well but the way it was built took up a lot of the z clearance. The clearance issue is the main thing I want to fix and I would like to reuse as many parts as possible.

I hear ya on that one. I am trying to finish my z axis for Heavy Metal as we speak and I have quite a few recycled parts hanging in the mix. You mentioned a preference for 6061 grade Al. I am having a devil of a time with my plates due to the fact that the motor on my vertical mill is down and out. I have probably wasted a couple of feet of my 1/4 by 5" stock trying to hand jam it. I would gladly trade you some for some assistance with my plates if you are interested.

Thanks, I only designed the three plates that for the z-axiz upgrade. the original plates for the machine came from blue ox solutions.

I used MGN12 rails and bearings, I used cheap ones from ebay but the have served well...

I have had a couple of requests for the files for the plates from this build so I have added the fusion 360 and step files for everything to the files section.
