X -Y Stage Hidden Acme Rod Example

    Any idea when the acme threaded rod and the nut will be in stock? My makerbot needs a better Z axis!

    We are working with samples right now and once approved we should be good to go for production. At that point we find out the jobs lead time and we can post at least some kind of time frame.

    Great build, I was looking for an accurate/stable xy table to attach to my wood lathe bed for applying ornamentation to turned bowls. I do not need motor drives, will be using hand cranks instead. My question is , the use of 12mm acme thread rod instead of 8mm, I need to use LH 10 tpi rod, would it fit? Also how rigid is the table once its built, tooling would be a small router or a hand piece affixed to a tool holder used on metal milling lathes.

    @sfbayman, based on measurements you should be able to fit up to 12.2 mm diameter down through the slot which would be pretty tight but doable. Obviously you would need to put the nut block on the outside. As far as rigidity, when properly tightened up you shouldn't have any problems but the key there is keeping the cutting end as close as possible to the center of the table glides. The farther you extend, the less rigidity you will have.

    Thanks for your reply, another question is the height of the xy table , my lathe is 16 inches, so I have 8 inches from the bed to the center point, the 20x80 v plates bring it up about 1.5 inches, not sure how much the wheels add to the total height, plus a platform to hold the tool post , 1/2 inches , the tool post has adjustable height capabilities but I need to cut at the center which is 8 inches. Most xy sliding tables for machinist lathes seem to be about 4.5 inches in height . The final question is , can the xy table be locked into position once the acme thread is turned and the cutter is advanced 1 or 2 tenths of an inch into the work? I am indexing the work piece and the spindle is sometimes locked, xy table also needs to be locked until during the cut.. I could just buy an xy table, but wanted something that could be custom made for my lathe and the cutters that I will be using. The table will be about 400mm x300mm.

    What you are considering has begun to stray too far from the above example. A 300x400 table is far too big to be stable on such a narrow based system. But I don't exactly know enough about where you are going with this to be of much assistance. I would recommend downloading the sketchup files and working the parts around to get something that is workable. You'll also be able to get a better idea of the heights involved. As far as position locking, you will need to add some method to achieve that, either with a counter rotating lock nut or a lever clamp.

    Thanks again for the reply, my goal was to create a tool/ platform that would allow access to the project at different angles, basicaly side and front. After considering your reply,this could still be accomplished by creating a subplatform on my bed and using ttrax so the xy table could be repositioned on the platform as necessary. This would allow a more reasonable sized table of about 150mmx275mm. My current cast iron sliding xy is 5.5 x 10 inches and 4. 5 inches high.
    I am intriqued by the system that you provide because it allows for some customization without huge machining expense. I noticed while browsing the web site the varied uses that have been devised by cnc enthusiast. I hope to utilize the system in some way .
