My spindle/VFD combo arrived (RATTMMOTOR spindle). And this paper was in the box.

If I'm reading this right, it is saying hook up the 3 legs from the VFD to the pins on the spindle motor, but don't connect pin 4 to the GND on the VFD (GND screw has red paint on it).

So, what should I be doing with pin 4? And what else should I be doing to minimize EMI with this type of VFD/spindle setup? I'd rather do what I can upfront while I'm building rather than after the fact. Any suggestions welcome.

I was already setting up an old metal PC case to house the VFD. Reading through that, I would think that I should ideally have a separate housing for the Black Box controller.

EMI from the VFD gets into everything around it. Keyboard/mouse cables acting like antennas brings it into the PC, and knocks out the onboard USB hub, killing connection to the BlackBox too, for example. Just isolate and earth the VFD, spindle and its wiring properly, cannot shield the whole world around it :) - fix the source, not the symptoms of any EMI

I've got 2 other VFDs in my workshop. One on my manual mill and one on my belt grinder. Both have 2hp motors. I have run the belt grinder while running my Sainsmart router and not had any issues Both of them are earthed properly. The wires from the VFDs to the motors aren't shielded, so I'll keep an eye out for them as a potential source of interference. I will be ordering shielded wire for between the VFD and spindle for the LEAD.

From the linked guide, I see what they were trying to say with the bad translation is to avoid ground loops.

While you didn't explicitly say it, if the VFD is earthed properly, the BlackBox should be ok in the same enclosure?

    Thanks!

I'd still not put both inside a faraday cage no

I have my VFD mounted high above my screen which is mounted high above my computer and I have no problems at all with EMI. I do have filters for the limit switches, which are built in in the Black Box. Also, my VFD is earthed. I have no need for the boxes, especially since I need to control the VFD manually (I prefer it manually).

    Building a CNC Router 1500mm X 1500mm modified quenbe with DDCS V3.1 Off-line controller + NVMPG Remote Pendant, (5) HBS57 Closed-loop Axis controllers: Z-Axis 2-phase 1.8 deg. step, X-X'-Y-Y' (Mirrored) are 3-phase 1.2 deg. step units) with a water-cooled YL-620A 2.2kW Spindle drive. Control will go into a 24X24X12" enclosure.

Is an external 24VDC power supply required for YL-620A? Running load on 24VDC supply? Terminates where? I am using a Mean Well NDR-480-24 DIN Rail 480W 24VDC power supply for HBS57 axis power. Suggestions welcome.

    Later .
