    download and install OpenbuildsCONTROL .
    in CONTROL click 'GRBL Settings'
select whichever Openbuilds machine most closely resembles your machine in configuration (belts or screws) and size.
make sure homing is turned off even if you have homing switches
    click 'save to firmware'
press the reset button on the blackbox

set a small jog step and make sure the tool jogs in the correct directions
pre-calibrate : use what you know about the machine to preset the steps/mm settings, maybe use a calculator to help you.
Calibrate, you can use the wizard in CONTROL or follow the instructions. (which is a bit more accurate since you can measure over a longer distance).

At this point you have directions correct and step/mm calibrated...
now, if you have home switches, you can use the troubleshooting tab to check that they work correctly
then enable homing and check directions by resetting grbl and homing (finger on Estop!) to check that homing goes in the correct directions.

if you do not have home switches, then learn to fake the home so that everything works the way Gcode expects it to.

now, cut a simple test in some insulation foam.

You change the steps per mm value. Refer to the Grbl wiki (github.com/gnea/grbl/wiki)

The calibration is done the same way for gear rack. You calibrate steps/mm using the wizad. However, when you design your items and generate the gcode using your CAM software you can use inches. You can also chose "Inch Mode" in OpenBuilds control.
