I apologize for any redundancy but I am an FNG and am completely stumped. I just put together my first Openbuilds machine, a Lead 1010 w/Blackbox. I downloaded the latest control software and plugged into the Black Box. I then connected to a port and what I received back was not encouraging to say the least.

I did not have a GRLB setup option so I couldn't build the firmware. I am sitting here salivating over all the projects I could complete if only this machine would let me. I did read posts about getting grbl-LPC but I didn't find it and would not know what to do with it when I did find it.

    1) it comes preflashed, no need to install firmware. Also note GrblLPC is for Smoothieboards, not BlackBox
    2) unplug everything but the USB cable from BlackBox: faulty wiring can prevent the board from running. Most likely when you have Limit switches wired wrong. Unplugging is a quick test to eliminate 'things attached to it' as the cause
    3) if your wiring was causing a short it will not boot. Because it did not boot, the software isnt getting a response back from the firmware :)

Just remember don't plug or unplug with the BlackBox powered up.

Appreciate the fast response! Will try the solutions later tonight. Doctor is calling... Do yourself a favor and don't get old. It cost more than a wife...

Just realized I didn't answer you. I did in fact send an email to the parts store but I reckon I will need to wait until Monday to hear back from them. Thank you for your help and patience.

Yeah they will get right on it when they get in on Mon with an exchange process. That said, its odd that its dead as usb is one of the QA processes just before it leaves the door. So lets throw some more testing at it maybe we get you running

    - any other usb cables you can try
    - sure you have the FTDI drivers from OpenBuilds BlackBox 4X Documentation
    - 100% sure nothing but USB is plugged in
    - same goes for the PC side, unplug any non neccesities
    - are you 100% sure COM7 is the BlackBox, no other USB FTDI devices like an arduino or something plugged in?
    - in the first test you tried reflashing, i assume with wiring still hooked up. Did you test that again now that everything is unplugged?
    - do you have a another PC to test with

    tried two other cables.
    reloaded drivers
i have only the box and my laptop at my desk. Nothing else to plug in.
I have no other com ports open except COM7. That only opens when I plug in the box
Just tried to flash but it came back saying flash failed.
    same result with desktop computer

    From your other questions:
Test board: that was the above procedures.

No power except USB: USB is 5v power, so board has been powered

Could wrong cabling have burned something: well we tried to protect against all scenarios and make it foolproof so kinda unlikely but hey who knows maybe you invented a new way :) hehe. Anything you know happened? Folks often times get the endstops wrong (because they dont order the easier to wire Xtension Limits Xtension Limit Switch Kit) but that is just temporary. When unplugged things go back to life. So if in doubt make sure you unplugged them all

Which board has the firmware: well, theres Brains, and Muscle :) firmware is what does the thinking, so I guess Muscle would not make sense :)

DOA: that's why i said contact the store, get a RMA we dont mind sorting it out. Is weird though as we program and test them thoroughly. So still good to do some introspection in case something that side broke it, that it doesnt befall the replacement too

Hey, you have no idea how much I appreciate your help! I do not feel I am alone in this problem. That is worth an awful lot to me and others. Having retired from the Marine Corps, I am learning an awful lot about the term, "Semper Gumby!"

Appreciate it. That said, i am GMT +2 going to leave you behind shortly and head to bed. But will be back in office in US hours Monday :) have a good one and good luck

Ps: being a FNG (had to google it lol) i assume you dont have ICSP programmer on the desk? UsbTiny, AvRISP? Etc. No issue just quicker than sending it in to be rebootloaded

No, I don't have any of those programs but can get them if needed. I am always looking to expand. My wife says I have "expanded" way too much but...

:) maybe on your own boards. Please dont try it on the new board hehe. Was just checking if you had one and then maybe we could do one more check. Oh, and avrisp from amazon is likely a fake, which might do more damage than good. Rather let the partstore sort it out :)

Based on your last, I canceled the order to Amazon. Not that much of an FNG to not listen!:banghead:

    Good stuff! Yeah can be hit and miss (;
But yeah, easier to let the store worry. Not sure if they replied yet, but do check your spam folder too just in case

They did reply and the box is at the Post Office as you read this. Thanks for your help and guidance. I was just about ready to use the persuader (a 2 lb. maul) and convince the box to start working.
