Sphinx Upgraded plates / ballscrews and linear rail

    When I replaced mine, I cut the 40x40 the exact same length as the original C-Beam piece.

    My Boss loves Model trains and asked me to create him a power panel for all of his gauges and switches. Turned out great:

    1/8 2 flute un-coated carbide bit, 770mm/min feed rate, .5mm depth of cut

    Hi Troy, I see that the right and left arm drawings are exactly the same. This makes sense to me but wanted to confirm before I start cutting.

    The only difference is the bolt holes for the stepper motor on one side. Just an FYI, I ended up manually re-drilling those holes to make them align better with the ballscrew.

    Wow this is an amazing build - Enough so that I'll make my first comment post on this forum.

    @Troy Proffitt Is it really difficult to level and align all the rails for a build like this? Especially with the aluminum angles you had to hand drill? I'm interested in building what you've set-out here basically from the ground up off a WorkBee setup for my first build.

    Not sure if I was lucky or not, but I had no problem with my rails. I drilled the holes in the angle before I mounted to the rails.

    Here is mine. Still work in progress. Using 1605 mm ball scew on the Z and 2010 on the X/Y and 15mm HIWIN rails.
    Mocking it out of 4mm plywood before I start cutting each of the plates.

    Sorry I'm late to the party, but this looks great! Looking at the picture, I noticed you placed the ballscrew bearing on the outside of the aluminum plate. I'd be curious to see how you are going to mount the stepper motor.

    Thanks. Yes, in order to maximise travel, I went with the end supports on the outside. The solution for mounting the motor took time to come up with. I milled another plate which sits on the outside of the end support and has mounting holes for the motor and is bolted through the end supports to the main arm plate. I'll try and post a picture tomorrow

    Here's the solution I went with for mounting the end supports on the outside.
    Also attaching an updated picture of my build. My CNC is going into a sea shipment to the US tomorrow so next update will be in a couple of months :(

    Do you notice any Whip with the ballscrews being that long?

    The ball screws are pretty beefy and don't whip at all. The original leadscrews whipped around terribly tho.

    Nice machine, I can't believe the prices of the ball screws. cheaper than getting multi start acme rod. So they are good? no problems with them at all?
    I'm going after the 1510 workbee but being looking at how to drive it other than 8 mil lead screws and belts. This just might be the ticket. So what kind of rapids do you get from your set up, which drivers and motors. I'm thinking of getting the blackbox with the biggest motors openbuild supplies. Thank you for sharing.

    Mine have been great. I'm using 350oz nema 23's running at 24v. For a controller, I'm using the protoneer/raspberry pi3 combo. I use my tablet as an interface running VNC. I was running 3000mm/sec through soft wood this afternoon. Hope that helps.

    Wow that sounds awesome, 3000 mm/sec is super fast, like almost 10 feet per second. I can't run that fast lol. Sure that's not per minute? Never heard of the protoneer before. Are they the drivers or do you need something else to go with that other than raspberry pi? I'm thinking of the blackbox, I have the workbee in my shopping cart but man looking at the Canadian dollar right now, SUCKS, will cost me 3 grand for the machine and that's not with any of the upgrades like you have done to your machine.
