    I have ordered many item from openbuilds and they ship quick. I'm betting with the holiday's there's going to be a slight delay maybe a week. UPS doesn't work new years eve or day, so there's 2 days lost....

    The whip at 1m is boarder line with a 8mm lead screw and anti backlash nut let alone 1.5m what will require a bigger screw and in turn a bigger stepper to have any sort of precession unless you slow the travel down and that defeats the object

    z travel is limited by the router/spindle clearance and the bit length

    also at that sort of size you end up with massive amount of code a simple house sign I did was 300,000 + lines of code and most of the hobby g-code senders can not handle that amount of code in one go

    Hey guys,
    Need some help. I've been trying to get my machine running. I've been having problems with my computer and controller. I'm wanting to run Mach3 but I can't get the ports and pins setup for my parallel port (LPT1). Here is my setup.

    24V power supply, 5volt converter box, kl4030 drivers, C10 controller.
    My computer is running Windows 7 32 bit.
    Not sure why the parallel port is not working correctly, but I think I might just take out the C10 controller and buy a different motion controller that has a USB port. They vary in many different sizes and prices. Would anybody have a recommendation on a good controller that would work for mach3 and my current setup.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated

    check the port settings in device manager, its been a while since I used a lpt port, disconnect the steppers from the controller and check the voltages and current draw of the 5v

    Why am I still seeing parallel ports in use. They have not been standard equipment in computers for ten years or more. And USB is so much more powerful. Just asking no flames please. Lol

    Because the industrial cnc machines still use it as a standard - new machines are network based and usb for local control - we where binning parallel printers 16-17 years ago and those HP printers that could take it got a upgrade card or a JetDirect card until they died completely with 8-900 k pagers through them

    saying that there are companies out there using dot matrix printers with usb to parallel adapters


    edit, a Arduino uno with grbl will pin out directly to the stepper drivers (5v logic) - a really low cost upgrade

    I run a Dm524 for the 2 y axis motors on my c-beam this way

    WOW. You folks at Open builds know how to pack a shipment. Just got it in and started disassembling the box and just WOW. had to stop and thank you for that. Looks like everything got here just fine.
    Looking forward to building the C-beam.

    Just wondering is the precision shim just a standard washer as it looks like. I am missing one for one of my larger solid wheels. Is they are I will just go to the store and pick me up a few tomorrow

    no there not a washer, washers have a flat side and a curved side and are not a uniform thickness, the shims are flat both sides

    you could use a few washers to make up the thickness as a stop gap

    If everything from this list was used, what is the expected resolution of this build? This includes the Nema 23 Stepper Motors. thanks
    1.8° from the stepper
    With 8mm pitch, that's .033mm per 1.5°
    or, .0013"?

    Hi @Brandon Graham we are in the process of getting the resolution and loads specs for all the actuators we currently stock, but we want to be sure to use real world measurements and not just part specifications that may not work out to be correct built together. So we are working to have real world testing completed on these actuators very soon and will be sharing the results on the corresponding part pages. Thank you for understanding.

    Hi Mark. Thanks for the response. My spec is .004". So if I calculated that theoretical tolerance correctly, it could be 300% off and I'm still good. I understand that someone on the OpenBuilds team might not want to confirm that for me, but I just want to make sure that I am not missing any other variables. Maybe another member of the community could give me a wink or a nod?

    Brandon,

    If you go only by the stepper motor then...
    200 steps per revolution, but assume you use microstepping of 4:1. So that's 800 effective steps per 8 mm of travel = 0.01 mm or about 0.0004".

    However as Mark points out there are other errors in the system, e.g. spindle runout, spindle parallelness to the Z axis travel, backlash and squareness of the build (X to Y, X to Z, and Y to Z). The later can vary widely depending on how careful you are during your build. I was intent on coming up with a good process to confirm and correct squareness of the build. Haven't gotten around to it yet.

    Will be interesting to see the results that Mark's team comes up with.

    So I am building one of these things and I own a colt. Where do I find an 1/8 inch collet for it. I have searched and find that most if not all have stopped making their collets because of design changes in the colt.

    Edit: I have tried the new shim with the 69.25mm ID and it work great for me. Printed with .43mm extrusion thickness. Everything slides together easily but snuggly.

    I updated my file on Thingiverse for the shim for the Dewalt 611...I added a shim that was slightly larger ID. Mine was a little too perfect and was too tight. I haven't tried the new one yet.

    I bought one of those for a machine I want to be portable.
    I just need a usb keyboard and mouse to test it out.
    From what I have read it looks like it will work just fine though...
    in a couple of days I will let you know how it works out for me...

    as far as the steppers
    4988's are just fine or you can go with the 8825's the 8825's handle a little higher voltage.

    First things first, Thanks for such an awesome machine design! I bought the c-beam machine last week and i'm very impressed by its design.

    That being said...

    I have a few problems getting it to work. The build was very straight forward, and the parts we are using seem to work fine I'm just not sure I have the settings right. We are using an Arduino uno with the cnc grbl shield, a 12 volt power supply and nema 23 steppers. During set up, we got movement as expected at the default grbl settings. We attempted to jog the cutter around at different feed speeds and found that the motors were stalling out if we pushed them past 100 mm per min. When we loaded the test program it wanted to run at 10000 mm/m. Not a chance. Not sure what is wrong. So when we changed the settings in grbl to match the recommended ones given, it started stalling out at 50 mm/m. Any ideas?

    Here is a pic of my latest project using my CBeam Machine.

    The plexi and 1/4" aluminum was all done on the machine and came out great!

    Too much preload on the bearings?
    too low of current for the steppers?
    Did you adjust the current on the stepper sticks?
