Ideas for driving a 10' X ? Belts, Chains, R&P?

    Hello,

    I plan on building a robotic gantry to do some light duty material handling (less than 10 kg) with an X span of about 3 m, I intend to use V slot components. I'm looking for ideas on what I should use to drive the X and starting to wonder if I'm over complicating things with regards to precision. All the information and threads around here pertain to CNC and 3d printing; I don't need that same degree of precision. I need to the mm rather than .001 mm, plus the gantry will always return to a home position after every stop (goes from A to B to A) where it could be zeroed out.

    My problem is I get all caught up with the cool stuff like servobelts and roller pinions when a simpler, cheaper solution would work just as well.

    So what should I be looking at to do 10'?

    A simple belted system should do the trick without getting into overkill.

    That would be a big belt, to withstand the span and weight, which means less resolution. It's also cheaper, that's why I'm spanning 1.2 meters with gt2 belt, 9mm wide. Not sure if you can stay with gt2 at 10', 3.3 meters. If you want resolution, ball bearings is the way to go, but your wallet will be sad that day.
