I cannot get this thing to work for the life of me. I have an x-carve/x-controller, I ran black to Ground, Blue to Probe, magnet wire is correct but when I go into troubleshoot, the probe is off all the time. I've tried to change GRBL setting $6 to enable, that triggers the probe but touching the plate to the bit does nothing and touching the magnet to the plate does nothing also. I've checked and rechecked all the connections, nothing wrong there. I've rebooted everything 100 times, nothing there. When I try to probe, Z goes down and doesn't stop unless I abort the job. I just got the probe today, it really shouldn't be this difficult. Any help would be beyond appreciated, I have a useless machine sitting idle.

Until it reflects correctly in the Troubleshooting tab, don't try probing you will damage endmills.

    1) make sure you have a machine profile loaded (CONTROL > Grbl Settings tab > Select machine from the list > Save and reset when prompted)

    2) if it still doesn't detect touching the plate to magnet, it might still be wiring

    3) swop a probe/limit so the limit is plugged into the Probe port, press the limit - does that reflect?

    4) make sure you did update Firmware (Section 7.1 of the BlackBox Documentation)

I have custom machine selected because it's an x-carve, is that not correct? I get this when I try to flash.

Are you using our controllers? BlackBox? 4X or X32?

Awaiting your testing on the other point(s)

Using x-controller that came with the x-carve.

Good, well, then the Firmware flashing is not relevant
Its only relevant to the BlackBox controller
That leaves either a faulty controller (test your probe port by bridging GND to PROBE on the controller), or faulty wiring between the controller and the probe.

So ground and signal both in the probe wire slot? Sorry, learning as I go.

The probe works like a switch. It closes the two pins of your probe connector together. As a test to see if the issue is controller, or probe wiring, you can put a short length of wire into the 2-pin terminal on your controller to simulate the probe making contact.

That's good, but we are playing the "elimination game" by doing a test with a short wire, instead of the probe, to see if the issue is with the x-controller (probe is a very simplistic device, not much that can go wrong, your wiring order is correct, could just do a once over to make sure wires are tight inside all terminals, not pinching any insulation anywhere, etc)

Ok then controller, grbl settings and software is fine. That leaves you with wiring the probe - something there is not making contact, go over all the wiring again.

All connections are tight, no insulation getting clamped, wires are in the clamp and not under. Still nothing, no lights when touching the plate with magnet, prove still showing off, etc. Could it simply be a defective board on the plate?

Possible, but unlikely. Do reach out to Submit a ticket and we can try

PS: that is correct for a 2-wire setup, the lights need power. You want to wire up 5-24v to V+ if you want to see the lights (See docs:xyzprobe:wiringgeneric [OpenBuilds Documentation] ) but the Troubleshooting tab should reflect the probe making contact

So I got it to flicker triggered in the troubleshooting tab. I redid the wire 4 times going into the plate. The last time I got it work, it touched the plate a few times with the magnet and it showed triggered. I attached it the collet and touched the bottom of the endmill with the plate it showed triggered then stopped working when I tried it again. Now I’m back to the probe constantly showing off. Wire that fragile that it keeps breaking causing a short?

Depends. Did you contact the store to try a replacement as suggested above?

I meant I guess the probe stopped, help lol. I was typing in my phone. I submitted a ticket, I think it’s the wire harness, I’ve required 5 times, everything is correct and secure and it still flickers as triggered. When I did get to work for a bit the bit just tried to drive through the plate and then right back the probe staying off ‍♂️ I feel I should have just gone with a new black box when I got the new probe. Live and learn. Appreciate the help very much!

Weekend now, but they'll get a replacement to you next week, then we take it from there.

Well. Lets try a replacement probe first. If the issue persists, its always an option :)

I have the XYZ Probe, and I use it with an X-Carve 750. It works like a charm.

A couple things to keep in mind:
    - test that the probe contact with the mill works. This test can be performed within Easel in "Machine Settings"
    - make sure you have a working macro
    - start with the tip of the mill inside the whole. Not necessarily in the center of the hole, not touching the walls, and below the surface of the probe

The first time I used it, the probe was just seating on the stock (not secured). The reading was accurate, and the exercise did not even move the probe or the stock (I'm NOT suggesting to do it this way during normal operation. Just as a test)
