Sure it would Bob but hobbies are all about building, experimenting, learning, achievement etc.

I fly RC and although buying RTF can, nowadays, be much cheaper than building I still construct my own aircraft.

I agree with you about the building aspect of this but my worry is the Mains voltage. My brother was working the the electrical wiring in his house and made the mistake of touching the wrong thing. He tried to do the "DANCE of LOVE" on the ladder and fell off. I ask two questions from him. Did you know what you did wrong. He thought about it for a minute and said "YES!!". I then asked was he going to do that again and he said "Not That Way again". Stupid brother.

Yeah, I agree but I kinda have to draw the line where I could zap the snot out of myself. This is a cool project but it is best left to those who know what they are doing.

Hey you could mount the de-mag to your hard drive and hook it up to a mercury switch so when the NSA tries to take your computer it erases the hard drive ;)

    Tweakie.

(there are already devices being used, in certain countries, which protect the HD data from unauthorised access but they don't use electromagnets).

I made one from a blunt hair clipper. The vibration mechanism is just an open ended coil, just like what you created. It normally moves a spring loaded armature that connects to the moving blade. I removed the armature and bandsawed the excess casing out of the way. It even has a handy switch on the side of the remaining casing.
