Found Pergo Wood Flooring samples @ Lowe's Home Improvement store in a variety of colors, just 25 cents each! (Your mileage may vary)
These 3/4" x 5" blocks are made from real hardwoods and would look great with something carved into them.
Working on a few ideas for projects - will post pics!
